I'm due to have a microdisectomy in the next few weeks to help resolve issues with foot drop and other issues in my right leg. Has anyone had this procedure and do you have any advice/experience? I'm told I can't lift any weight for 3 months for the best chance of a good outcome, I'm wondering if I can lift my toddler or is that too much?

I will be asking these questions in my next appointment too obviously!

@solamanda Yes, had one 10 years ago. Op was a success, no complications or side affects etc. walked out the following day.

It’s been a while now, but I do recall taking it easy for 4-6 weeks, with just gentle walking etc. and then building up from there. Back problem free for 9 years until last year, but current issue not strictly related. We had our second child two weeks after my op and I didn’t lift her for the first month as I just didn’t want to risk it, as it was absolutely fantastic to be pain free. Prior to the op, I had been unable to stand straight for a very long time, ending up with quite a twisted back as a result and had been taking quite frankly massive amounts of painkillers to keep working and going.

Caveat I am not a doctor, but as this is STW you can treat my comments above as completely gospel.

Has a microdiscectomy (or however it's spelt in 2007.
It was for very bad Sciatica.
Was walking in a few days.
I had an unexpected delivery of a gearbox I'd ordered whilst full of high strength painkillers and stupidly (again full of drugs) helped the delivery guy lift it off the truck (no tail lift).
I still had the dressing on the wound.

My back has been pretty good but I have the odd episode due to another disc and some occasional issues with the area of the op, such as a 'clonk' followed by pain/sciatica if I turn awkwardly or haven't been looking after it.
I can't say for sure if the lift I did made ongoing problems worse but it's probable.
I'd be a bit more careful in hindsight and not lift anything.

Yes. You can ask for clarification but they normally mean nothing more than a full kettle (so about 1/10 of a toddler..)
