I have a few micro SD cards which may be causing issues with a device. I have downloaded some software to test writing etc. These are new cards.

Is it just a lottery to find out which ones are good etc. Any help or advice?

Buy branded cards from a known good supplier. Avoid whatever Amazon calls its budget packaging. There are a lot of counterfeits out there.

Sandisk or bust for me. Life is too short to piss about with cheap SD cards.

Format them in the device you're using them with.

Yes. Scammers can hack a card and make it misreport the storage capacity. They just print new labels and packaging and sell you a 16 GB card as a 512 GB one. It will work fine until you exceed 16 GB capacity, then it crashes. Buying from Amazon just isn't worth it. Even if you buy from a genuine seller, Amazon often fulfills the order with an identically labelled product from a different seller so you can end up with a counterfeit anyway.

I have only bought Sandisk, but I'm not having much luck with quality and reliability.

Sounds silly but I tend to get mine from Argos. Always SanDisk but I'd hope their supply chain is a bit more traceable than Amazon sellers. Never had any issues to date.

Indeed. Hence my packaging comment. Counterfeit Sandisk cards in blister packaging (from Amazon) is vanishingly rare as far as I'm aware, it's their 'hassle-free' packaging or whatever it's called which could be anything if it's from a marketplace seller.

Incidentally, whilst we're Sandisk fanboying:

They have a lifetime warranty on their cards and they aren't arsey if you try to invoke it.

Yep - Sandisk for me in everything. Never had a failure once in use although one did turn up DOA and was replaced without a fuss.

Given how cheap a quality card is this days I don’t see any reason at all to not get a decent one.

Another one for SanDisk only from approved sellers I've had duff ones from Amazon.
My cannon takes the old compact flash cards I've tried loads of adapter cards to enable SD cards to fitted all rubbish.
I brought some large capacity CF cards from a seller and even they where snide the seller had no idea. They looked pucker Samsung

SanDisk or prograde. Never have issues.

The card readers can be a bit poor.

I'd always go for SanDisk Class 10 / U1 Speed Rated card too regardless of application, I see they also do a higher U3 Speed Rated card now.

Buy from someone like 7dayshop, never buy from eBay, and view anything from Amazon with suspicion.

Anyone seen any deals on 128GB or 256GB cards recently?

What device is it?

Not all devices will work perfectly with all cards, but that's getting towards niche and high end cameras and more a flash memory rather than SD problem. Does the device have a list of cards they've approved/certified?

Other than that, SanDisk or transcend. And only ever bought in the propper packaging from reputable shops.

Never buy anything that looks cheaper than elsewhere, even if it's only just cheap enough to creep to the top of a Google search. Just pay the average-ish price from a decent supplier.

I gave up on Sandisk from Amazon for my GoPro as they never worked. Switch to a Lexar recommended by Go pro and now problems. I second going to Argos much less chance of getting scammed.

Lexar 633x cards were recommended to me for performance and compatibility.

As above, buy from somewhere reputable and don't try to save money. (another recommendation for 7dayshop - I've never had an issue with anything I've bought there AND their prices are keen too)

I’ve only ever bought Sandisk, 99% from Amazon (ONLY from Amazon themselves, never marketplace sellers - I think a lot of people who think they’re buying “from Amazon” don’t actually know the difference!) Must have a couple of dozen over various cameras, RPis etc, and never had a problem with any of them.

I used to buy SanDisk  at 7dayshop but they don't have any large capacity ones in stock

Ended up getting one from MyMemory. I'd forgotten about them

256GB for £27

I use Sandisk for my camera but have moved away from them for the GoPro. Now on Samsung, seem ok so far.

Amazon/ebay are jus tthe same when trying to get genuine Samsung or Apple chargers, just don't. Sandisk all the way TBH, but reputable seller - 7dayshop as mentioned above.

Fella who makes those iPod adapters has created a good list of reliable card manufacturers.
Has PNY as the top brand, I seem to recall buying a couple, still working well in my iPod 🙂
Samsung EVO are very reliable too
