Blimey. Lucky chap indeed.
That sort of action makes me feel much safer on my bike, assuming no one releases land sharks on the Surrey Hills!
Outrageous! Poor old shark goes for a nice swim at his local beach and assaulted by some random Aussie guy.

I think there were more people killed on bikes in the last 2 years in Australia than by sharks in 200.
I used to get ridiculed mercilessly about my concerns re sharks when surfing in Australia until my Aussie mate's step son was involved in a fatal attack by a great white. Difficult to compare fatalities, how many surfers/cyclists, how much time spent doing it etc. It's the can't-see-them-coming business that gives me pause.
that was nuts, was watching the live stream on the net and just thought f@@@rk!! Feel sorry for Fanning, clearly in shock with cameras thrust in his face. The WorldSurfLeague exectuives must have been creaming themselves with joy at the publicity / web analytics boost - i read somewhere that the clip on their website was watched around 3million times since it happened yesterday- then next highest was 60k
Biking is way more dangerous than surfing though!
Looked like a weird incident.. Almost like the shark got tangled in his leash and and bumped him as it threw it's head backwards.
Funny watching how fast he started swimming.... He must have been absolutely bricking it.
Did some surfing on Stradbroke island in Queensland, a rather hefty population of sharks off there resulted in me not exactly enjoying the experience to the max.
I live in Sydney - I surf every week..... I do not watch shark attack videos.
Lol just seen the video, who in their right mind stops swimming to shore to see if jaws is still following.
I would, at least you have a chance of defending yourself (punching it in the nose etc.) than if you just let it bite your legs off.
I've used a similar technique on some rather cheeky farm dogs in the past.

What, flapping on a surfboard?

I think he was realised the support jet ski's were closer. Also, less splashing = less likely shark attacks.
I was struck how he seemed relatively content just kneeling on the back on the jetski trailer thing. I would want to be a boat very quickly. A big boat.
Mick Fanning
Wonder what version of truncation of his name, his mates use?

Interestingly he was attacked while just sitting on his board, unless he was splashing about before the clip.
There is a theory that sat on the board in the line up could give a shark the view when looking up to attack of a seal or turtle silhouette.
It's the can't-see-them-coming business that gives me pause.
Unlike being hit behind by a car whilst you're on your bike then?
I've watched the video a few times now and unless I've not seen the right one I see a shark swim up to him, he panics (I would) can't see an attack or any punch?
It doesnt attack him.. it looks a lot like it gets tangle in his leash... which freaks the shark slightly and throws its head back and sort of bumps into Fanning and snaps the leash. Then a wave obscures what happens next.. then the next thing you can see Fanning is swimming at Olympic speed and waves for the rescue ski
Yup that's about all I see.
How can you tell that? All you see is a fin out the water fanning knocked or pulled of his board. Lots of movement from fanning then the wave obscures the scene until we see him swimming. I dont think Mick thought it just got tangled in his leash.
Well it didnt bite him as he would have an arm / leg / large chunk of body torso missing... How else do you explain his leash snapping and him getting pulled off his board?
It could easily have hit him with a bite when it first swam up.
