Not to hijack the winter tyre thread, I'm close to having to change the tyres on my Octavia. I've been reading good things about the Michelin CrossClimate all season tyres. In the past I've always been sceptical about all season as being not good enough either as summer or winter tyres, but I've heard really good things on the Michelins. A bit spendy, but only a couple of maxxis MTB tyres per wheel so probably shouldn't skimp if they're good. Does anyone have any real world experience (even better on an Octavia, if anyone else on here has one 🙂 )
Watching with interest.
Not particularly close to needing new tyres, but had my eye on these for when I do.
I've got Michelin latitudecross on mine so can't help you there, but Michelin were offering interest free credit on bkackcircles when I got mine only a few weeks ago
Thanks, but I'm based in France 😕but Michelin were offering interest free credit on bkackcircles when I got mine only a few weeks ago
I've got CrossClimates on my A3. No snow yet but as a dry/wet tyre they're good. Quiet too.
I had four CrossClimate fitted to my Saab 93-X about a fortnight ago. I've not had to contend with snow as yet but we have had some frosty mornings recently and it felt glued down.
All I can say is, the car feels 100% more sure footed now and I can apply power through the front wheels much more confidentIy. It's a 180 bhp vehicle and it was skitty from rest previously.
Mine are 245 45 R17.
Thanks derek_starship that sounds like what I want.
This is my second winter with crossclimates. Been faultless in all conditions encountered in Scotland so far. I will be replacing with same again when these ones are done.
Not the Michelins. I put Goodyear Vector 4 Seasons Gen2s on my Octavia to replace the original Bridegstone summer tyres. There was a huge drop in tyre noise. Much better wet grip summer and winter. No noticeable downside in summer.
Only used in the snow a few times but far far better than summer tyres. I drove an Octavia Scout 4WD on summer tyres at work in the snow. My FWD Octavia was far better all round in the same conditions.
So whether it's the Cross Climates or something else go for it. I'll never buy summer tyres again. The Goodyears were about £15 a corner more than a good quality summer tyre. Came top in the Auto Express test. The Michelin was at no 3.
Are they rated as a winter tyre? They sound pretty good allround but if you travel to the alps for winter they may not cut it with the gendarmes - we got checked on the lauteret a few winters back.
I fitted 4 CrossClimates to my Skoda Superb (not a light car) in January 2016 and since then have covered approx. 22k miles.
They still had at least 4mm of tread on them when the car was MOT'd just before Christmas.
They're quiet, grip very well (we had some snow on the moors in late Nov/Dec last year and they were excellent), and appear to be wearing pretty well too.
I'd not hesitate to replace them with another set of the same when the time comes.
Crossclimates are summer tyres but have three-peak-mountain with snowflake logo on them which means they are suitable for winter.
"Despite its summer focus, it meets the industry’s snow grip standard, signified by a ‘three-peak-mountain with snowflake’ symbol on the tyre."
Right, smashing. Getting some. Thanks to all who replied.
I've got them on the front of my Scenic - no complaints so far, although I haven't had a chance to test them in snow yet. They were fine all through a Madrid summer, including doing 1000km over a couple of days, seem pretty quiet and I didn't notice anything negative.
Cracking tyres - had them fitted on last couple of cars, they wear well and give plenty of trusted grip. Tried them out last year in around 4-5" snow and got back to the main roads without too much hassle while others were stuck. Not as good as my old snow tyres but do not hit the fuel economy like they did - good compromise in my eyes.
Got a set for the Berlingo last winter, still going strong and quite frankly they made it feel like a different car compared to the previous set. Would buy again.
I've got some for my Volvo 940 which is an auto RWD beast. I went out when there was slush in the road and intentionally tried to wheelspin and found it quite hard!
If I was buying my own tyres I wouldn't have anything else. I had to go out and buy some summer tyres just so I could drift the car!!
CrossClimates are on my wishlist for new car based on prior threads. Also I saw another thread today recommending these Nokians
I've got the Nokians, primarily because the Michelin's aren't available in the size I need.
Both tyres get really good test reviews and are different to all season tyres. The manufacturers call the all weather tyres instead.
Pretty happy with them, although they haven't had a proper winter test yet and we'll see how they feel in summer. Feel very secure when it is a bit icy and they are brill in the wet.
The Nokian Weatherproofs are All-Seasons biased towards Winter, the Michelin Cross Climates are All-Seasons biased towards Summer. Between those are all the other All Season tyres...so if you are in mountainous area I'd go for the Nokians, the Midlands, go for Michelins.
We got the Nokians, previously we've had Kleber Quadraxer which are All Seasons from the Michelin factory.
I have a new car on order for 1st March and coincidentally mailed them this morning to see what cost would be to swop out standard tyres for CrossClimates from the outset. Not heard back yet....
My bet. They'll want to sell you a second set of wheels and snow tyres ... I suspect they won't offer more than 40% trade in against old tyres if really pushed. Excuse my cynicism.
Fitted to my golf and it feels like a new car. Grip like a limpet and quiet too. Definitely fit again although I only do about 2000 miles a year in my own car.
2000 miles a year makes my 3500 look positively indulgent !
Interesting what tyres did the Golf have before ? Conti's ?
Second winter on mine, cannot fault them.
Used in heavy snow earlier this year and lots of icy 5am commutes.
Great grip and feel, seem to be wearing pretty well.
Got a very good deal from a local place, would definitely buy again.
Previously my golf had bridgestones
Thanks
Blimey. Just gone and bought the Crossclimates, very impressed so far indeed. Quiet, and feel very grippy in the cold damp we've had here recently (not snow, but close to freezing rain). Thanks to all again. Snow expected tomorrow - expect I'm out for a drive 🙂
Agreed, they're good tyres from my experience although I didn't have to use them in full snow conditions they were good elsewhere. Would buy CrossClimates again.
Sleet in Levallois, new tyres + bad weather = excise for a drive.
Just an update; been to the Alps. They're very good tyres indeed on snow and in drenching rain. Highly recommend them; not quite as effective on snow as proper snow tyres - which I expected - but still very good even on fresh snow. Got me up to Avoriaz from Morzine without chains despite deep slush turning to 5 cms or so of fresh stuff on the road at the top. Have to take a bit more care than on proper snow tyres but made it up with no hairy moments.
