I'm quite a well established mice killer having dealt with them in my old garage, occasionally under kitchen units and most recently in the loft. Never a major infestation, just a few here and there. I've always preferred murderous traps rather than poison or live traps.

We had an extension last year and it includes a small side office with flat roof. As I sit here working I can hear occasional mousey sounds in the roof. I thought it was birds on the roof but I've now worked out definitely mice in the space. The problem is, how to get to them?

There appears to be quite a bit of mouse sized access beneath and at the ends of the lead flashing where the roof meets the side wall of the house. There is also gaps (I assume) for ventilation, above the guttering where the roof folds over on itself. All of these gaps are big enough for mice but not for getting a trap in. Inside the roof I have led downlighters, I might get a trap in the hole if I pull one of these out. I assume the space is going to be full of insulation though.

Any thoughts or useful suggestions? Leaving the mice alone is not an option as I don't want the hassle of replacing chewed through lighting cables.

Is it worth putting traps in the guttering or on the roof itself, or will I just kill birds with this appraoch?

You'll kill lots of other things with normal open traps. Outside they need to be caged/tunnelled etc to prevent this, I believe legally as well as morally.

As for how to get at the things, trap in the light hole, or better still, remove the light, afix an easy (for you to) access box with bait and trap under the hole and let them climb in.

Now if anyone can suggest how I do this with my double skin brick wall cavity I'd be grateful.
