Our house lacks an office, and with Mrs FD and myself probably working from home maybe 2-3 days per week going forward we have wondered about a small mezzanine floor.

The only thing is we are not actually sure if we have the space?

The visible height on the ceiling is 3.40m and then in the loft space there is approx another 1m to the top of the Apex.

We would want it to extend out about 1.8m to just before the door on the left.

Would a mezzanine be possible ?

You're not going to get enough headroom.

To give you an idea that door is going to be the height of the ceiling downstairs and only just the height in the very centre on the mezzanine.

Its going to make both rooms pretty unpleasant. And probably not meet building regs.

Bear in mind you need a depth of floor AND some Additional structure in the roof as you are destroying those trusses if you remove the existing ceiling.

Absolutely, anything is possible, would result in some structural changes in joists above ceiling, and some alterations below floor level to base it all on, but it's definitely possible.

We built an ensuite in the bedroom, and as we have high ceilings too, put a massive high level storage cupboard above. You'd be looking at something simlar really, but with the added work to support weight at height too.

An architect to have a look would be a good starter, and would also advise on permissions/warrants etc.

As above though, you may struggle to have 2 levels of useable space, may have to rethink the lower space use, such as a snug, or sofa area etc, or even storage.

Hmm not looking promising.

The idea would be just to have the area below as the dining table as is now, and quite like the idea of a it being a 'snug' area. I must admit I did think the loft space was higher than it actually is.

The space upstairs only needs to be small ie enough for a full dept desk for PC and monitor/printer etc, and a space for midgets...we are only short! But I get thats not the point. The only other thing is to extend the roof line on the right hand side of the picture to some kind of Dorma effect, but I hate the look of Dormas

bear in mind you also have to get up there! judging by the doors in there the stairs will get in the way of your dining room.

Have you taken that photo from stairs? would its work on the wall we can't see as a minstrals gallery type arrangement?

Would a garden room/office be a cheaper and easier solution? About £10k will get yousomething pretty decent

That’s the view from the other side

The whole house is big, but not very well designed rooms so it’s difficult to make efficient use of space. Also the outside space is limited so are garden room although ideal would not be possible

Upstairs is through that door at the end. This room is double height (almost) . Kitchen is to the left, living room to the right with bedrooms above

Okay how about nobeers concept. Can you free up elsewhere by putting in a storage mezzanine?

That is a crappy room layout to be fair can you get rid of any of those openings to make the space more usable? A desk set up only needs its own footprint when not in use how about a pod thing faceing you on the other side of the handrail. Stick a curtain up if you want a bit of privacy/sound deadening.

Similarly that extra bit of step does nothing can you put a partition up there back to the dog bed? Doesn't have to be floor to ceiling. Or sack off the livingroom door entirely and put it in the hall opposite the stairs where doors should be.

You've got loads of floor space there its just a stupid layout with all those doors.

Tbf, a garden room sounds a much easier option, though could be done for lots less than 10k.

I have another one... Move the dining bit to infront of the glass doors. Short wall extending out next to the front door, desk across arched window folding doors that open and sit against the kitchen wall when office in use.

Aye, you could then get creative with a fold out desk arrangement that all packs away into a nice slimline Wood panelled cupboard for the weekend.

I thought 10k was for producing drawings. 15k if you want a drawing of something buildable.

I rent up here a pretty large attic room and I have to say that it is weird only having decent standing height in the centre of the room.
When I converted my loft in Weymouth based on my experience here I put in a huge dormer to increase the usable floor area.

Was a house in that London (I believe Duffy, the Welsh singer used to own it) that decided to do the whole cellar conversion thing, it went slightly awry....

Aye, your right! That one was an end terrace IIRC, backed onto the Thames.
