Looks like I've fractured a metatarsal in a freeform microwave oven shot putting competition (Patio:1 Microwave and right ankle: 0)
Weirdly for an old giffer, this is my first fracture. I was triaged, X-rayed and fitted with a boot within 90 minutes by the local A&E, but will have to wait until Monday to get a rehab plan from the fracture clinic. I'm interested in hearing from others who have done this top see what the next couple of months holds for me. I ride both SPDs and flats and am not too jumpy. Dinghy racing is probably going to be the same schedule as cycling, but I do have a rowing machine, which should be doable. Any advice other than ice, elevate and have a beer?

Bilateral spiral fracture of the 5th metatarsal 10 years ago. 2 boots fitted, 6 weeks later & back to cycling and Taekwondo (in shoes & no kicking or sparring).

I think I got off fairly lightly, all things considered.

Hi, sorry to hear about the fracture. I broke my 5th metatarsal around 12 years ago when I fell off a kerb. I also broke the phalanx bone in my large toe about  6 years ago when I fell trail running. The metatarsal has healed fine, though my advice would be to take things easy as it’s 6 weeks minimum for fractures to start healing. I took this approach with the metatarsal and as mentioned it gives me zero trouble now. I was less patient with the big toe break and it didn’t heal quite right and I know have arthritis developing there and while it doesn’t stop me doing anything yet, it is still a bit painful at times. Re the metatarsal, from memory the physio was keen that when walking I didn’t limp even if it meant going super slow. I think static bike was fine after a few weeks as was gentle swimming, though probably best not pushing off the walls with any force. It was maybe a month or a bit more before I was walking without pain and I think about 4-5 months before I was back running properly. In summary my experience was give it time, don’t rush and it should recover just fine - good luck!

Ah, thank you both. I'm going to try and keep the lard at bay with a bit of one-legged rowing if I can, and not push it too much. Luckily my job's sedentary so I can do that, although I'll probably go ever so slightly spare if I can't get outdoors enough...q
