I'm thinking of getting a 'decent' tool box, with drawers, to replace my flimsy plastic boxes.

I had a quick look in Halfords and liked the higher quality ones with roller bearing drawers - but they seem to have the Halfords price mark up on them...

I've found the Clarke CTC900B online for a much more reasonable (1/2) price. Can anyone verify the quality of Clarke tools chests, or recommend anything else suitable?

Ta muchly!

I've got halfords ones - the better red ones not the cheap ones - and they are very good, I don't know what offers are on at the moment but they are often a third off or on a buy a cabinet get a top box free promotion. If you know someone with a trade card they will be cheaper still (or at least they used to be, sometimes the trade discounts change 🙁 )

The clarkes ones in machine mart look about the same quality - but they also do a couple of diffent qualities.

When the halfords ones are on offer there isn't much in it tbh.

Edit: if you're near leicester you can borrow my halfords trade card 🙂

I might wait for a Halfords discount then... The one I was looking at is £120! The Clarke nearest equivalent is £70... just don't know if it is the same quality (although it says it's got ball bearing runners)...

Cheers for the offer of the trade card, unfortunately the petrol costs getting to Leicester rule that out! 🙂

I've got a cheapish Clarke one - not great, but then it gets moved around a bit, bashed and dented. Clarke Pro stuff seems to be markedly better quality.

IIRC the clarkes one you are looking at is equivalent to the cheap halfords range, They're not bad but the runners aren't great if the drawers are full of heavy tools and theres a fair bit of play so it is possible to jam a drawer if your not careful.

The halfords pro are equivalent to the clarkes HD ones, much better quality runners and generally better all round.

I started out with the older version of the halfords 6 drawer combo chest with drawers and TBH unless you've got a garage full of sockets and stuff it's all you need.

Halfords often have promos on the chests. I got the black "pro" version. Its not as nice as snap on but i doubt i'll break it. Or fill it for that matter!

I've had the Clarke Blue cabinet and chest for about 6 years. The only damage has been to the cabinet which had fully loaded trailer hitch dropped on it about 3 years ago. The metal folded over at the top by about an inch and the paint broke off around the impact area but no rust or distortion to the cabinet itself, all drawers still open smoothly and open/lock without a problem.
I've also used the cabinet as a platform to stand on, no the safest thing to do but shows their strength.

I've wrecked a few plastic toolboxes over the years so I now have 3 ammo boxes from the army surplus stores, nice and robust, and only a tenner each (needed a clean mind)
