My shed felt was blown off in todays gales.
Its done pretty well really .
Been replaced and made as windproof as possible ,repaired , refelted a few times.
Shed roof panels were not great condition , cheap crap glued ply stuff ,but now the rain today has totally ruined them, so ....
So just planning the way forward.
I could try and repanel the roof, with decent ply but would be a semi good job as not the best on the tools and cost of materials does add up.
I would need to reinforce and strengthen roof and frame to be able to get on top and do the job probably in situ....yet more material costs.
My question is has anyone had success with metal sheds ?Â
Size 5 ' x 10' .
I may just put up a new shed . Job done.
Metal or timber?
Your thoughts welcome thanks.
I deffo got my monies worth out of the old one.
Shed is a windy spot in Scotland !
Â
Metal will tell everyone there's likely something of value inside. Though very easy to maintain.
Â
Timber is more maintenance. But looks nicer and more inconspicuous to thieves.Â
Â
I'd go for a good quality timber shed with a ground anchor put in during assembly. Could use some kind of metal mesh user the roof to prevent wind damage.Â
You could super-reinforce the roof from brand new on a wooden shed.Â
I'd go for wood, but I'd put a butyl roof covering on it, not roofing felt. It's not very expensive and will be much better in the long run as you glue it on and it won't degrade like the usual shed roofing felt does. Basically like a big pond liner on the roof.Â
Alternatively go with repairing the roof and butyling that or tin sheeting it?Â
The old roofing felt has just been damaged on our big log cabin style man cave that came with the house over the winter. I've tried repairing it but the felt is just shot really. I was thinking to go with the butyl for that, but have bitten the bullet and ordered metal box section sheeting and barge boards for the 5m x4m roof. Never had such an amazing shed before so I want to keep it right.
I have metal sheeted in the past as repair on garage roof at a previous address , it does work well. A great option.
But on my shed i am not covinced I can fix it down securely enough on the existing timber. For the really windy days like today.
Handy tip about the roofing , looks good, just been reading about it.
Â
I'd pop a new roof on, not difficult. Need to do our storage shed's roof this summer.
Metal sheds are terrible, they condensate really badly and intrinsically have no insulation value. Unless you pay lots the cheap ones are flexible and very unsecure. Wood everytime for me.
I have a proper agricultural standard metal shed. It's 10 years old so far, no condensation, no rust and basically ****ing amazing compared to the cheap Argos shit. And cheaper (in Ireland), then wooden stuff.
If the structure is sound then re-roof with some metal roofing. You can get 0.5mm or 0.7mm thick, pvc coated or plastisol (a bith thicker and harder wearing). 0.5mm, pvc will be fine for a donestic whed roof if you ply or shiplap line under it (spend the money on wood under it, not the thicker as it will help reduce condensation).Â
I have battens and earthwool on top of my shiplap roof and the metal sheets. I didnt bother with any felt and its been fine, in hindsight i probably should have but i was in a rush and didnt have any. M
Â
The thicker plastisol is good for walls that will get knocked - ie commercial, farms etc.Â
Go to a place that will cut it to length for you, you will save money vs wasting material and save a lot of hassle.Â
My wooden shed is really thin shiplap. I bought it from an online company that was a bunch of fraudsters (dissolved the company, started a new one). If doing it again, and i wanted security i would use 50mm thick dungwall and go log cabin style and diy it with a metal roof over ply with insulation between.
I also have an asgard 8 bike, going to fit a solar powered fan to some of the vents to help with condensation and a lip above the door as rain can sit on top of them. Been using it for tool storage but just revamping it to finally use for the bikes. The condensation has been bad lately as i emptied it and left the doors open in freezing fog so it was filling up with moist air. The fan will be a precaution, i may also fit some multifoil to the roof.Â
Â
Put metal roofing on top of your existing wooden panels.... They're probs not ruined.
If it needs reinforcing just so you can get on the roof then the whole thing is knackered and needs replacing.
