If it doesn’t flash, is it even an advert?

I think that even if it is a well intentioned peice of information it is still an ad. Flashing or just plain text...

What about PSA’s?

Guess it depends who posts it. If for example neil(?) from superstar components put a PSA for their wheels then defo an ad. A third party then its not so clear. Some PSAs are better than others so I would struggle to get excited for a PSA for a perpetual sale but I probably wouldn't get my knickers in a twist about it.

maybe I should have been less cryptic.

Hi full members – the rest of our site visitors are seeing an ad in this position for a bike sale at CRC. We thought, although you don’t see ads by default, that you may find it useful to know about this sale and we don’t want you to miss out. If you are interested the link is here

We thought, although you don’t see ads by default

yep. pretty much the only reason I pay for a digital sub.

that you may find it useful to know about this sale and we don’t want you to miss out

you don't want me to miss out? really, CRC always have a sale on, it would be more notable to tell me they didn't have a sale on.

did you really mean, CRC paid me extra to tell paying members about it despite them asking us not to?

i read the advert more like "we actually have bikes for sale again" rather than "as usual we are advertising a 'discount' sale, but dont worry, there will be another in 6 weeks..."

if a) you paying members may be interested, if b) probably less so

I'd be more interested if they had updated their stock list since 2015.

No!

They didn't pay any extra. It's a genuine sentiment that I imagined some might appreciate. CRC are not even aware of it as it's only full members that see it.

It's some text on a website that's in a smaller font than the rest of the page (which I chose in order to really try and minimise any possible interruption or offence). Would you like me to remove it? I will if you would prefer. I can also set it so you can't see the classifieds too and I'd sorry it says 'Buy our stuff" over there on the right.

Full disclosure time...

ps.

I'm not really that grumpy about this. I'm much more immune to it these days, but when I read this post my eyes did roll a bit 🙂 It's funny that in 20 years of doing this, if i was guilty of even a single digit percentage of the corrupt accusations that have been thrown our way, I'd be browsing a private island catalog for my second one. But here I am, apparently trying to make my millions by corruptly promoting the bicycle 🙂

Seriously though, if I've made a mistake with this, I'm sorry. PM me if I've misjudged this. It's some text on a page. It's easy to get rid of it in less than a minute.

Alright, maybe that was a little unfair.

It just struck me as a really odd thing to do. CRC always have a sale on. They are the DFS of the bike world.

I didn’t notice it at first but now I have I can’t stop reading it. Looks like from the avalanche of replies, it’s just me...

I did wonder why the paid members of the site are not getting adverts but then get some text (which is essentially an advert) to tell us about something that a fair amount will already be aware of - and not have an option to hide it.

Mad times we live in.

It only bothers me as I need to scroll further down the page to get to the bits of content I'm interested in (and I can't remove it after having read it), but in the grand scheme of things, it isn't really a big deal.

No they don’t. They often sell stuff at below RRP as standard, but what they are doing now is a limited time offer of extra discount on those, below RRP, prices.

I’m struggling to to see how it’s any different to someone doing a PSA thread.

Really doesn’t bother me. Didn’t read it till the third login anyway. Now the ads on my Eurosport sub - they’re annoying.

Doesn't bother me either - I even went and took a look, but no S-Works Tarmac SL7s at 50% off.

I'd prefer to see no advertising tbh, it's why I paid up to be a #newnormal 'redmember'.

I'm intrigued though- what made you decide that the CRC advert was worth mentioning to me whilst other ads have not been treated in this way? It seems somewhat biased/ preferential towards CRC, to the detriment of all your other advertisers. A.K.A Not fair.

That deserved more love than it got.

If Mark / someone else at STW had posted it as a PSA in the forum would you have complained? Genuine question, would that have been more or less preferable than putting text in an ad placeholder?
