We love ours, it's the most comfortable thing we've ever slept on, definitely not hot but it's dying, well before the 10 year guarantee is due to run out. Trouble is the 10 year guarantee isn't worth the paper it's written on.

So I seen posts suggesting there are cheaper (but not dirt cheap) "memory foam" alternatives to Tempur memory foam mattress, anyone care to point me in the direction of these?

Need to replace the mattress, as it sags, so need a complete new unit unfortunately.

I've got one of these.

I've been quite impressed with it, firm but not overly so, supportive, didn't stink when it came out of the bag. I've only had it for 6 months so can't comment on longevity.
Used to have a tempur mattress and it's not as nice as that but half the price.
Before that I had a futon and memory foam topper which worked well.

We have a memory foam mattress from John Lewis and it's been disappointing, not as good as the one from Dreams we had before (that the cat pissed on and we couldn't get the smell out of 😡 ) but they no longer seemed to sell when we needed it.

Plus we get staff discount from JL which made it cheaper than elsewhere.

So for clarity OP - who's the memory form mattress manufacturer who's 10 year guarantees aren't worth the paper they're written on? Just incase I'm in the market for a mattress with a 10 year guarantee.

I can tell you what NOT to buy !

http://www.harrisonspinks.co.uk/

We have one of their memory foam mattresses. Its pocket sprung with foam on top. Cost about £2k new.

Absolutely the most comfortable mattress we have ever slept on. Doesn't get hot either.

However

After approx. 2 years from new the foam began to 'move' to form ridges in the middle and sides. Harrison Spinks sent out an independent inspector who agreed not good.

Harrison Spinks said it was a manufacturing error and the line had been discontinued, and sold us their latest effort at approx. £1,300 (discounted) They assured us it couldn't happen again.

It has lasted slightly longer, and is not quite as bad, but yep its gone again.

Will not go back to Harrison Spinks Mattresses again. 😈

It's a Tempur unit, & maybe I was being naive that the 10 year warranty would be worthwhile, but the piece of mind of purchasing such an expensive unit was that if it failed, we'd get it replaced on that 10 year warranty
The warranty only cover VISIBLE dips over 2" deep, ours doesn't have any dips BUT does collapse* as soon as you get it.. totally worthless & 6 years old.

* a common complaint about these type of mattresses

I've had one of the ikea memory foam mattresses for 9 years, now in need of replacement but it's been great and wasn't too pricey (c £300 iirc). looking at their website they've changed their memory foam line and the most expensive one is now only £200, whether it will stand up the same or not though is unknown but going to give it a whirl

I'm thinking about an eve mattress, like the idea that you can return it within 100days if not happy.

That was why I got one - took us about a month to get used to it, now I wouldn't be allowed to change it if I wanted to (which I don't!)

I've slept on Tempur, Back in Action memory foam and cheap memory foam (eBay - maybe SilentNight).

Tempur feel very different to the others. In the end I started getting too hot on any of them.

Now sleeping on Latex from LatexSense and it's both comfortable and cool.
