Any recommendations for free file recovery software for a formatted memory card?
My phone threw a hissy and deleted everything, so a couple of years worth of phone pic's gone.

I downloaded Card Recovery last night which found all of the files, unfortunately wouldn't let me save any unless I bought the full version.

Piriform Recuva is good. And free.

I thought my mum's mac had wiped 2500 pictures off my SD card last week. Showed her some pics from it, went home to get them onto my laptop (Windows 7, complete non-response from laptop, not even a "bi-ding" tone for having plugged something in.

The camera that I took the photos on didn't recognise it either - just said internal memory full as if there was nothing in the card slot. Tried it in my wife's Windows 8 laptop as a last resort. Everything there in Explorer, nothing amiss at all.

???

I believe that Kali has some recovery/forensic tool on that could help you.

TBH I wouldn't bother with Kali unless you know what you're doing, too much hassle for what you need and it's quite advanced (not to mention I think it only works with very specific wifi adaptors unless that's just the hacking programs).

There are easy ways of doing it in Linux, just download a copy of Unbuntu, make a Live USB stick and do some quick googling from there. I managed to recover loads of stuff that had been deleted this way and it didn't cost anything except an hour or so of my time, sadly I'm not at home so have no links but when I get there I'll happily post all the links I used. IIRC I had formatted over all my files as well so it should be a walk in the park to get yours back.

This is now your prompt to back up everything to dropbox or something so this doesn't happen again.

Zero Assumption Recovery has worked for me in the past (and is free for recovering images)

Just the other day I needed to separate two Lego bricks, so I hired an industrial wrecking ball and a road drill.

Recuva would probably be my first port of call these days, or just seeing what I could see from a Linux live CD.

Pretty sure this is what I used, seems it's Windows friendly too 🙂
