I was a member here a long while back - previous username 'Slim' - but lost touch around 2010ish after moving to London and switching to road because I couldn't be arsed to travel to the trails.

I now live in Sydney and have just got back into what is a very different MTB scene after 11yrs here. I brought a Cotic Ti hardtail over with me when we moved, but the rocks and sandstone put me off so I sold it after 1 ride! I then tried again a few years later with a fat bike but ultimately sold that after next to no time too.

After those two false starts, I'm finally getting back into it more properly, despite being old and grey these days. This place was one of the first sites that came to mind to look stuff up, but, for whatever reason, I had trouble getting a forum login until now.

So, I'm curious - anyone still here from those halcyon days?...

Still here since the days of the Gofar message board. Don't post much anymore though. More of a lurker as there's a lot of very strongly opinionated Richard's (no, I don't mean you Barton), on here nowadays.

Mountain bikes have come on leaps and bounds since the 2000's, have fun!

Yep. Been here since year ','

Organised on here and Rode the first MTL night ride with a few early shakers who still frequent this parish.

Keep thinking I ought to do it again, as a night ride.

Whereabouts in Sydney are you? Got a couple of friends out there, I was there in September / October for the Worlds in Wollongong.

I think I joined the fun in 2002. Issue 7 was my first copy of the magazine I think. Like some others I was possibly a bit more present on BikeMagic for a while but eventually settled here.

I've been ChrisL all that time.

I joined back in about 2006, used to have the username belmontkingswood. Things were a bit wilder back then, the favorite insult was ***, which then got banned. Then the mods threw a tantrum when someone posted the picture of the guy sitting **** and banned everyone who posted on that thread. I snuck back after I changed jobs and got a new verifiable email address. TBF to the mods, the internet now is a sewer of filth and now that I'm older, I can see why they didn't want the site turning into a trolls' nest of obscene filth.

I was on road.cc for a bit but stopped even using it due to the trolling, shitposting and adverts. This is about the best moderated and most user friendly forum I've found and it helps that most of the users police it pretty well too.

I remain amazed at the depth of knowledge on here - no matter the weird and wonderful subject, someone on here is a genuine expert on it! STW always pops up near the top of any Google search on any issue, there's invariably a thread somewhere on it, even if it dates back 10 years!

My profile says 2009 but I think I must have had an account with a different name from about 2004-5. I got into mtb about 2004 and definitely found the site early although I was much more of an mtb-wales user then. I moved to london 2008 and mtb- Wales, which had been a small tightnit group, imploded about that time so I started using stw loads, but I can't believe I was just a lurker for the previous 3-4 years.

Any other mtb- Wales big hitters from the naughties here? @scratch I know, anyone else?

Welcome back.

First mag was issue 3. Was more BikeMagic then.

Have emails with the web-team about a meetup in 2006. Met Chipps in March 2006 at the opening of Carron Valley.

Same username as pre-hack.

2009 was the hack, when everyone had to re-register, that's why our registration dates only go back that far.

I was probably here 2004-5? Not sure.

Still here. Same username. Can't believe how long it's been - I reckon late 2003 is when I started to visit frequently, since before that I think I had a username but didn't dare log in from work as the guy who sat next to me had been fired for 'accessing the internet' - no one ever elaborated on that so I didn't come on here just in case.

2001 iirc, always the same name, joined after Matt Letch waved a copy of issue 2 under my nose back when he was at Chelmer cycles. How much were those issues- can remember being wary of buying at the price.

Been here for a good 20 years, changed username due to different circumstances.

I remember your old name, always stuck in my mind, probably because the words were so unusual to my antipodean ears.

Early for me, although as others my profile says 2009.

I remember my first STW groups ride in around 2001 ish. Met close to Halifax and set off at huge speed straight up a road onto the hill tops.

Far faster than I was expecting, or capable of holding, so flaked out at the top. Somebody offered me a banana but it was too late by then as I was cooked - 20 minutes in 🤦‍♀️

Made my way back to the car and re-evaluate just how fast I could ride.

I took a copy of the magazine on holiday with me, picked up from the airport. Pretty sure it was #2 (no, not shit, the issue number) and then joined after that. It was early 2002 I'm pretty certain b/c was holiday for my wife's 30th so March 2002

I was jonv, then post hack for some reason couldn't get that to work so became theotherjonv.

Shit, 21 years of time wasting.......

2003 for me I think. Joined before the first Verbier girlie week. I might have had a photo in the magazine from the trip. It was that trip that got me the buzz I used to get from windsurfing

Bikes then took over in a big way and family holidays were spent in the Alps.

Nothings changed for me apart from a few bikes, getting a bit older and the girls growing up

I think 2005/6, met loads from here back in the day but fell out of love with cycling for a few years. Back in the saddle now, but never left this place.

I remember like it was yesterday the Evilzone hack...

Edit...

2006 Mleh meets in the Peak

Had a great ride from Holmfirth with some of those lads...

2005 I think for me, I moved to Wales in 2005 and was eagrly asking questions about Afan and local trails before the move.

Was a shame MTB Wales imploded, it was a bit abrasive at times but I still see and text folk I met on that from time to time.

There's at least one other occasional poster I know from those days bashing around on here.

I was thinking the other day about what that feller who sat in the top left corner is up to know! 🙂

I still have the turbo trainer bought from Ton in about 2010!

This place has been a constant helping hand through a multitude of problems though which is why I've stuck around and owe a bunch of people a thanks for their feedback.

, So thanks everyone!

Never really managed many get-together rides, even in Edinburgh (monksie's farewell being an exception) and now much further north, much less so. I do have a selection of jerseys and merch though.

Another "early days" member here. I'd have to go into an old Hotmail account to seen just how early.

I remember "The Flying Pieman", "42" (he-man topless pics), and the original Badger Badger Badger Badger days fondly. Who was the kid who posted pics of himself in his bedroom in full BMX gear . . .

Happy days.

September 2005 I believe. Was druidh back then. I can't recall who first pointed me here. Might have been dirtygirlonabike ?

I've met quite a few forumites, either solo, on some sort of group outing or those who were also on mlehworld when that was a less-moderated option and some of the banter on there just wasn't allowed on STW.

I was a mag subscriber before issue 1 came out. Looked at gofar a bit before that, but I guess I could trace my way here through various newsgroups etc, starting maybe 1997 ish?

There are still quite a few people about on here that I've kinda known for getting on for 25 years then... and a few that I actually know.

Has your mate recovered from the shits yet? That was when I first met Terrahawk.

I went on the STW ride when they first moved to Tod. Been knocking about since the Go Far days though.
