I seem to recently be getting limescale deposits caught in the tap airators and annoyingly the digital shower mixer filter. Easy to clean out the taps but the shower not so much, it's under the bath.
Looks like the tank is stainless in a megaflow so the scale doesn't stay attached in the tank and so presumably makes its way into the hot water pipes (mostly plastic btw).
Quick search suggested that the tank can be drained and vacuumed out, which sounds bizarre. And experience of this or other solutions, other than an expensive megaflow replacement?
Do you live in london? The water is really hard there and you might benefit from water softening installed on your supply lines. It's not as expensive as you might think but does require some period changing of filters etc.
Surrey. Water is a little hard, but not terrible like London water. Water softening might be a good idea going forward.
It must be hard to some degree if you are getting limescale.
Fit a water softener, it will save on cleaners (CIF etc) as you'll never have to get rid of limescale. Over time it'll remove the limescale from your pipes too (which may be a problem if that's all that's sealing micro leaks, but hasn't been in our 1969 house).
sam - is the megaflow electric ony or heated by a boiler?
The limescale will build up on the heat exchanger so if its electric only, you can drain the tank, unscrew the immersions and clean them off/replace them.
if a boiler then the coil inside will be fixed and not so easy to clean. access to the coil/base of the cylinder is still likley to be through the immersion heater connection. from memory, the megaflow uses 1&3/4" immersions so it'll be tight to get any sediment out through them though.
ultimately, it will keep happening unless you do something about the mineral content of the water. If it is scale, then your other appliances (W/machine/dishwasher/kettle) will be suffering too.
Thanks @Smudger666 . It's primarily boiler heated, so sounds like a PITA to worry about cleaning. Other appliances really don't suffer much, weighing is why I'm slightly confused. Take the kettle for instance, it's probably 10 years old, never been descaled and only shows some very light scaling.
I think I might fit a y strainer on the main hot pipe and monitor the situation, at least that'll give me 1 single place to monitor and clean for now. If it's too restrictive to flow I can always remove it.
