You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Looking at the rescued Woden 186B/2 i have, can you get aftermarket swivel mounts that fit easily? Apparently all Woden vices came the ability to fit a swivel mount but you try and find one.. it the only thing stopping me from bolting it down
PS: I have a carpenter vice and a Record No. 23 which is too big for my uses.. if anyone is interest (stourbridge ways)
Had this installed about 6 weeks now. I've always made do with combinations of Black and Decker work bench, G clamps, levers and weight etc, but this is so bloody useful! I even clamped my SPD shoes in it the other day while I tapped an allen key into the slightly distorted bolt heads to remove them.

What paint to refurb a record vice?

WD40 and leave the existing paint? My vice looked awful but came up well with WD40 and a cloth

If it’s just worn and ‘patinated’, then spritz with WD40 and go over with a stiff brush then a rag.
If it was like mine was, where it had been slathered with all sorts of grubby paints of different types, so the paint was filthy and cracked, I put a wire brush on a whizz wheel, protective glasses and stripped all the crap off then hand painted it with Hammerite blue, which is as close as makes no difference to Record blue.
Been a while, so I’ll post the photos again…
Hmmm, Postimage isn’t playing at the moment, hope that isn’t a bad sign.
Is this one of the oldest threads? Probably one of the handiest things I couldn't do without in my garage.
It's a bit like a frying pan in a kitchen or a radio first thing in the morning
No clue but both vice' in the op are still in the same location getting good use repairing all manner of stuff.
Great to see this thread still alive!
I'm down at our place by the beach and had to rebuild a small hydraulic ram last week. That got me thinking about the piddly woodworking vice I've was having to use on my workbench here.
So a little eBaying later and a nice Record No. 2 arrived yesterday. It was tatty and covered in old gloss paint, but working fine. A wire brush and some WD-40 has got it back into a very respectable original condition.
£35 delivered. 👍🏻
Good thread revival.
Heres a different angle on grippy things / vices
This is about a pair of 1.7m sash cramps.
I bought them cheap but well used from a one man band local Tool Hire company
He developed an aggressive cancer of some sort, and he had to quickly close the business and sold all of his equipment off.
It must have been mid to late 90's.
Anyway, the screw threads were pretty worn in both, one worse than the other.
I have used them a few times over the years, and got them out recently to use when making a small pet enclosure, and really struggled to clamp up tight.
Decision made, got to do something to repair them.
Immediately I found the problem.....the attached label said 'Made ln India'...
.
I remembered that you could once buy just the heads to use on timber 1" x 2".
Well you can still buy them, at a price, and probably made in China.
Did a search on ebay and picked these up:
Original boxes as well.
Made in England
It said used, but the Record heads appear to be unused, and the Woden (that business eventually became bought up by Record anyway), just shop/old age marks.
The Indians must have copied the dimensions of these heads as they are almost a direct fit.
I planned to keep the existing sliding head, but remove the fixed head and replace with the Record and Woden head.
The web of the 1.7m rail is approx 1/4", so I turned up 2 x 3/8" thick alloy spacers to fit either side of the web to make up to the 1" that these were made to fit, drilled through for the locating pin.
I now have a good usable pair of long sash clamps.
Might even buy a pot of paint to finish the job off in roundel blue:
I'm sitting in my shed, drinking wine because it's gone chilly and I can't be arsed to go inside and get a coat. I was going to take a photo of my no. 4 Record, but it feels underwhelming after the sash cramps post above. Good work Drnosh.
Right, as this thread is starting to drift into useful tools that aren't entirely vices, picked this nice sack truck up from the reuse shop at the tip today. Needs a puncture repair and wobbly wheels want fettling, but solid for a tenner. Not good enough for a dedicated thread though.
I'm probably wrong but I thought sack trucks have a curved back 🤔
Anyway, looks great and one of those nice little repair jobs to bring it back to full functionality.
Nice underwear btw 🫣
That there sack truck does have a curved back. Zoom in and you can see it.
Sadly I didn’t think to take a photo of my Record when I got it, it was in a real state, a very grimy reddish black/grey, the paint was so thick it was a bit difficult to tell it was a Record, but after using the whizz wheel wire brush, it looked like this:

Then, after carefully brush painting it:

With hindsight, it would have looked good with a squirt of WD40 and a wipe down, but whatever. 🤷🏼♂️
