So our double mattress is 5 years old and, tbh, I never really liked it in the first place. I've gone to move it today and realised that it's as saggy as hell, so it has to go.

I like a nice firm ride (who doesn't?) and was looking at the various online options (Eve, Simba etc.) which all look appealing, but not without drawbacks, not least of which being that you can't try them out first.

So, STW-masses, what have you got and what would you recommend (or recommend against!)  in the department of sleep equipment?

Mammoth. I got to try it out in the shop, in it's various firmnesses.

Stupidly expensive though. Don't know what I was thinking.

Spare bed has a standard, unbranded (as far as I know) memory foam mattress from Dreams. I've slept on it, it's fine. Was about £200.

Ikea memory foam job. Not a lot of money and as comfy as anything else I tried.

Simba. Can't get too excited about it, but does the job.

Temper.  Hot in the summer, but also hot in the winter.  Helps my back if I sleep correctly positioned.

Hypnos.

If if it’s good enough to sire future generations of royalty on, then it’s good enough for me.

You can try a Simba mattress at John Lewis if you want. All these online companies do 100 day trials too, they'll collect it and refund you if you don't like it.

Otty. It's one of the comfiest mattresses I've tried.

Mines an OTTY and you get 2 free pillows. Took about a week to get used to it but love it now and really like the pillows though I'm sure they wont be to everyone's taste. Was a good bit cheaper than most of the other brands as well.

Simba. It’s ok. Bit hot. Would have sent it back if I hadn’t missed the 100 days. Wish I’d stuck to a nice firm orthopaedic jobby from JL like last time.

The Emma one came top in a Which? report I think, personally I have a 10 year old sprung/memory foam hybrid Silent Night that's great and not intending to change any time soon

we have an Eve topper on our mattress (I thought our pricey pocket sprung JohnLewis 5year old mattress was fine but Mrs Ed wasn't sleeping soundly) and it's spot on

ignore the recommendations, it's a massive racket

Yeah, mine was more of a "what you got" rather than a recommendation. I mean, it is easily the most comfortable thing I have lay my weary bones on. But, stupid money. Although, people pay that much for things they use far more infrequently than a bed, so I don't feel too bad about it. Really!

Had a tempur, it was lovely but didn't last 6 year before it became problematic, if i had a bottomless wallet, I'd just buy another..

We just replaced it with an Eve and it's very firm, so firm I thought it uncomfortable after the (well worn in) tempur, but as my g/f pointed out were both sleeping really deeply on it, and definitely don't spin much either. I'd recommend it, if you like that firmer style of mattress.

I have had the same Silentnight mattress since 1998. It was the firmest one they did at the time and it’s still the same.

I’m always relieved to get back from holdays etc to escape their squishy beds

It weighs a ton though..... I suspect that they may have used Landrover suspension springs in it’s construction.

Solid latex from Dunlopillo

Bleeding marvellous. Cost a lot, but no springs. Love it - even now (as much as one can love a mattress)

Frankly, all I want is something that doesn't cost the earth, is nice and firm and won't turn into a soggy mess in 2 years time. I've speculated that a lot of the direct, internet mattress companies are spinning a yarn and that they are all just a very expensive piece of foam packing material with a posh brochure. That said, they're pretty cheap in comparison with some.

Our last one was a medium range steel sprung / memory foam one from a reputable, local dealer and, at five years old, is completely wrecked which seems a bit naff to my tight and grasping ways.

For those with Simba, Eve, Otty etc, how do you reckon they've held up over your ownership? As good as the day they were new?

Ikea, plenty to chose from. Rolled up so you can throw it in the car. Cheap as chips. 25 year guarantee. We ended up getting two singles which fit in a king size frame like an Austrian Twin. No more disturbing each other with different to bed and get up times 🙂

I've got a Leesa one, so basically the same as Simba, Eve, etc.

They do a 100 day trial on them. Had it 12 months now. It's probably the most comfy mattress I've slept on.

I sleep a lot better on it, and I can barely feel my other half moving around.

I had to sit down for a bit after checking the price though...

Had a Simba double 2 years now, it's just as comfy as it was new. The main sleeping patch does get noticeably softer after a while but I turn it round every few months and it recovers. It's picked up the usual mattress sweat stains but the cover can be cleaned.

So far, so good (Simba). They do come with a 10 year warranty IIRC...

Ikea memory foam job

Stayed in a AirBnB place recently that had these and they were horrendously uncomfortable for me and the wife(Checked to see what the mattress was, as it was like sleeping on a brick).

Others may have more positive experiences.

Got a memory foam mattress(Naturalex Aura) off Amazon recently which is infinitely more comfortable for me than the ikea jobby.

I still don’t have one after lots of searching and starting the body parts thread on here. They are just so expensive and the funds simply aren’t available to me at the moment. On the plus side our current mattress is character building. If I were to be kidnapped and tortured I believe it would be a sweet respite from sleeping on this bastard.

Tempur. My back's knackered after it got broken (stupid driver)  although my wife preferred the Ikea memory foam mattress - didn't work for my back. I still have difficulty sleeping, but I have much reduced back pain.

Flaming expensive.   Ideal mattress would be two independent ones as I can't settle well, and my pain meds make me 'jump' (electric shock type experience) at night.  If I'm like this, I go sleep on the settee. Done about 4 nights on the settee this last week.

Ikea, especially if you like firm. Avoid memory foam; no good for shagging.

Sorry to break it to you, that won't be the memory foam's fault 😉
