Can't help with the decision but we have just got an unused mattress off FB marketplace for buttons. The place is awash with them. Same on Gumtree

Our boys had memory foam mattresses when they were about that age and they both found them too hot. Depends on the foam I suppose but those ones retained heat, and kids generally run hot.

@muddyjames whenever I start a purchase I have no prior knowledge of… I now check whether IndyBest have done an article on the niche subject I am currently interested in

They usually pull together 10 well thought out suggestions that either provides me with an obvious solution, or at least saved me a few hours carrying out the same search

Having bought our 6 month old a mattress recently they may have some useful recommendations, let us know how you get on

Ours have both had mattresses from ikea, one memory foam and one foam/spring. No complaints for either and very reasonable pricing when we got them.

I much prefer pocket sprung on the firm side .. I find memory foam too hot and it's like sleeping in quicksand.

A small layer of memory foam on top maybe.

Just my preference though... A lot of people swear by memory foam.

Also look second hand.. I need to deal with my late nans house clearence and I'm gonna have to get rid of two doubles and two singles.. At least 3 of them will be pretty much brand new and without checking in detail, they won't have been cheap ones either.

I can't imagine a nearly new second hand mattress could command much money purely because it's second hand, even if it's effectively brand new.

Whilst she’s a freecycle addict with a lot of our stuff from there, I’m not sure how Mrs MJ will feel about a used mattress. Will ask her to have a look though.

A quick google didn’t bring up any crazy prices but Is a sub 100 quid mattress going to be rubbish.

We do have an IKEA one on an IKEA bed, which I need to try for size -thanks for the reminder as I was assuming it would be too long.

I bought a second hand mattress earlier this year - it was a single bed in someone's spare room that they said had only been used once or twice, and it did indeed look brand new.

IKea's more expensive pocket sprung one for £85. It's really comfy!

Ours both have the cheapest ikea pocket spring ones, they’re comfy from the odd times I’ve slept on them.

Most ikea beds and mattresses are standard UK size now.

There is a whole industry in acquiring (stealing) used mattresses (as in very well used), sticking a new cover over them and then selling cheap as nearly new or liquidated stock...

Apparently they break into recycling places to steal them as they can get £100 each for a soiled mattress with a £5 cover over it....

Our second hand unused spare room mattress was £100, retail online 500

People are rightly squeemish about used mattresses but there are plenty out there that are spare room/down sizing examples. Typically they start a bit too highly priced, don't sell then drop to about a hundred.

I bought an IKEA £99 pound mattress once.

It was also the last time I'll buy an IKEA mattress.

Ooh, following this with interest. I have a box spring one, nice and firm with a thick quilt topper layer on top. Needless to say the quilty soft bit is too effing hot in this weather, and I think the springs are going on one side.

Are these Emma/ Casper/ mattressw in a box ones any good in general, and for the price??

We have moved the whole family off memory foam and back to more natural materials (Ikea for single mattresses, local shop for the doubles) and we all think we sleep better.
