Aged 54, apparent drowning at home
He had many addictions through his life, so I guess more will emerge about this.
Not everyone's cup of tea, but he was great in Friends
Damn, poor guy.
Played that role perfectly, but obviously had a lot of issues.
Only my age. I'd best keep away from hut tubs.
His comedic timing as an actor was superb. So sad as this man was a huge part of many telly fans of a certain era.
Thank you for the laughs Matthew and may you RIP
Very sad, not completely surprising unfortunately.
Yeah, a little shocking this. I was never into the series in a huge way but it was still the "background music" to some happy years in my life.
My daughters are very sad.... They watch friends almost every day [for some reason!].
While he was a very messed up guy it's a sad thing to read about.
(maybe Freinds helped keep him relatively normal?)

I know it's speculation but that's all anyone here can do. I read that he has been clean for a decent period of time now, and this is more likely to be heart-related (due to previous substance misuse) exacerbated by the hot jacuzzi - i.e. heart attack and then slid below the water.
However it occured it's a sad loss. As above he will have been a regular fixture and brought joy to many millions of people, either through Friends or West Wing.
i heard an interview with him recently (turns out it was almost a year ago!) around the time his book was launched. it was very good. it’s on youtube,
audio version is on the cbc.

Ohhhh 🙁 I'm watching friends this very second. Super shocked at this but not surprised as I'm aware he struggled with things.
Could he be any more tragic?
After several recent threads, it's really heartening to see all these posts recognising the tragedy of life, no matter who they are, rather than anyone taking a swipe.
Hope it stays that way. We all need a good dose of humanity.
Sad when some one younger then you goes. He was so great in friends. It must be huge thing to play the part of not being the cool guy
Gulp 😩
Really enjoyed his sarcasm in friends.
What a shame. He was an archetype of gen z.
If he was a bit drunk, and a bit stoned then he was happy. I think it a bonus to go out in a happy mood, even accidentally, than coughing up your lungs or guts and miserable as f***

I heard that Friends was actually contributing to his troubles at times.
Particularly the stress of doing live scenes
Really enjoyed his sarcasm in friends.
You know it was scripted right?
His appearance in friends is quite eye-opening if you watch two episodes next to each other from different series. Like a yo-yo of health.
Poor guy, I think he was the only one in friends who already had a career when it started?
You know it was scripted right?
The character Chandler was based on a persona which Mathew Perry created himself. From a Guardian article:
”In a 2019 interview, Crane said the role of sardonic joker was the most difficult to cast, with Craig Bierko, Jon Cryer and Jon Favreau also considered.
“Marta [Kauffman] and I were thinking, ‘Chandler is just poorly written’,” said Crane. “Then Matthew came in and you went, ‘Oh, well, there you go. Done. Done. That’s the guy.’”
He also apparently personally contributed to the scripts.
Did her break not come from appearing in a Bruce Springsteen music video? She was in the audience and in the video got picked and brought up on stage to dance with him?
She has never been someone I've thought about, so there is no way I've dreamt that...
No, she’d been in some other soap for several years.
I may have misremembered. Pretty sure he was at the stage he was getting starring roles in pilots
He was also very good in the West Wing as Joe Quincy (sp?).
Friends may have been scripted, but his delivery was always perfect.
Joey after drilling through a wall into Chandler's bedroom quite near to his head: "oh, sorry, did I get you?"
Chandler - "no, you didn't GET me - it's an electric drill, you GET ME, you KILL ME!"
Still makes me laugh. 🙂 RIP MP.
Tragic, in many ways, too many demons and simply not able to keep them from the door.
so he didn’t do too badly.
WTAF?
Decent straight actor too;
Homophobe. 😉
Never seen a complete episode of Friends.

Are you my wife? That's her favourite bit of Friends trivia.
When it was on the first time, I felt that him being 11 years older seemed like an age away. I'm my 40s now and those 11 years feel pretty close.
His portrayal of Chandler I'm sure struck a chord with many .
Courtney Cox was cast for the Springsteen video, it wasn't that she was randomly picked from the audience...

Is that not referenced/mocked in Friends at some point? Monica gets picked to dance onstage when her and Ross go to the filming of the New Years Eve show.
Apparently Courtney Cox originally auditioned for the role of Rachel. That just sounds so wrong to hear now, but how everything could have turned out differently.
A decent bloke too by the sound of it
He was very good in Friends. The running joke that no-one is entirely sure what Chandler does beyond it being in an office is a good one.
Perry and Matt Le Blanc played well together and there was quite a nice balance to them as mirror images of masculinity.
Yeah, but in the music video she was picked to go on stage...it was scripted and that was what she had applied to do for whatever audition you do for a music video. The video plays out and she has just gone to a concert with her friends and she ends up on stage dancing with Bruce...Courtney Cox was cast for the Springsteen video, it wasn’t that she was randomly picked from the audience…
