My preference for paint is silk or satin finish. This view was scoffed at by the B&Q bloke when my partner went to buy some for the kitchen, matt is the choice for that job apparently.

Why, wise STW? She didn't think to question this.

For a contrast against those ghastly looking highly polished footballers wife style kitchens?

Personally I would have though something wipeable most appropriate

Because matt looks better than silk or satin finish anywhere. Fact!

HTH....

I was about to say does anyone paint rooms anything other than matt?

Then realised I'm sat in a room painted in satin/silk. It's a site portacabin.

Bloody hell, I didn't ask for my taste of wall covering to be assassinated!

Maybe the bloke in B&Q was also just highly opinionated. 😉

The B&Q guy is behind the times. Egg Shell is where it’s at these days.

Matt for walls as it hides imperfections. Owning an old house I don't have gloss anywhere if I can help it. Skirting etc. is all semi gloss. Satin/Eggshell.

I used to be that you got matt paint by having something with a lot of pigment in there. Gloss was a higher resin content. This meant you could normally wipe gloss and not matt. Tech has moved on now and you can get some very good hard wearing scrubable matts.

Go with what you like but I would consider getting one of the endurance/washable/kitchen paints as they work much better long term.

Tip from our decorator was to get whatever paint you wanted and mix with PVA to toughen it up and make it waterproof. Two years on we still haven't painted the hallway so cant comment on its effectiveness!

My advice would be not to buy paint from B&Q. We now buy all of our paint from a trade shop. Johnstones durable stuff goes on well.

Egg Shell is where it’s at these days.

Not for a kitchen though, it'll absorb every greasy finger print and food splash.

As for wipeable emulsion, whether it’s matt or silk, the clue is in the ‘vinyl’ bit, so little need to go to b&q for special bathroom or kitchen paint. As above, source your local specialist paint and decoration centre and any of the trade brands are good quality paints.

Contemporary trend is for vinyl matt finishes on new or old walls. Vinyl silk can look a bit 80’s IMO

Eggshell for woodwork, emulsion for walls, thems the roolz 😉

Bnq saw a pregnant Mrs t-r unsupervised coming and recommended her vinyl eggshell paint for the bathroom.

It is shit beyond belief. Bubbling when ever the heat and humidity gets up.

And looks pretty terrible too

Won't be doing that again.

"Won’t be doing that again"

Give it some time, we found it much easier with the second one.

This. At least get Dulux trade if you can't get hold of Johnstones.

You didn't buy the Valspar shite did you?

As someone who formulates paint for a living I'll counter that and say don't do it, it's an awful idea.

Or Armstead, which is also made by Dulux

Just get anything by Farrow and Ball. You get what you pay for.

I use matt paint in every room. Am I doing it wrong?

You can get wipeable matt paint - we use the Johnstone's stuff and it is virtually bombproof - scrubbed many a curry splash from behind the cooker and it still looks as good as new (been painted for 3 years)

You'll be overcharged for a load of watery rubbish. As others have said, get Johnstones. (tip, you can take a F&B colour chart into Johnstones and they have the codes saved in their mixing machines 🙂 )

This - it's crap. Better than DIY store own brand stuff but still crap.

A can of worms apparently I've got it, and it's open.
