I'm interested to see this, although the reviews so far do not kindle joy. Wasn't tottally invested in teh original films but the first one was pretty good at the time

Shouldn't you start the spoiler thread after you've seen it, not before?

I enjoyed. Very much in the Star Wars/Force Awakens comparison with the original. Love to hear your views tomorrow.

The original Matrix was enough for me - a novel idea executed really well. Both Reloaded and Revolutions were unnecessary IMO and dull. Judging by the reviews, Resurrection isn’t going to improve on that.

Saw a trailer for it last night, not hopeful, seems like it could be a remake of the original. I actually quite liked 2 and 3, but the I quite like the prequel Star Wars trilogy, well 2 and 3 anyway.

I really hope this is good, and will go and see it. Unfortunately I think that I'm going to be disappointed.

Metacritic scores it at 65, so a bit mixed but generally favourable. So it might be OK despite 2 & 3 being such bags of shite.

. I actually quite liked 2 and 3

You should probably seek help for that 🙂

I was hopeful, the trailer looked fun, but the reviews have been pretty damn awful.

Hmmm started well, very self aware and actually referenced nostalgia as a tool, then kind of drifted towards the third act.
I don't think the cast/ characters were strong enough. Morpheus was a good concept then absent leaving the film on neo and trinity.
For me the bit where they were going through the new game and what made the matrix good with ask Alice in the back ground was a high light.

I didn't have high hopes, yet still managed to be disappointed.

Derivative, and too meta for its own good.

The first half hour felt like watching a clip show of the old movies. The new characters were all forgettable, and the resurrected old characters had less presence than the first time around. The story was a bit lacking as well to be honest...

My copy and paste review from Facebook -

Having slept on it I can confirm it's truly a steaming hot pile. My Mrs was asking me details and I started answering before realising I couldn't because it made no sense. It's got more holes in the plot than a rusty colander, you'll be asking yourself things like why did they devise that cunning plan and when they could just do what they said they couldn't do? Why did they stop chasing them? Why did they stop shooting at them? The main fight scene was reminiscent of one of those horrible train station flash mob dance things and it comes to something when the best thing about the film is Doogie f-ing Howser MD.

Saw it yesterday - thought it was cack. It didn't seem to engage me, the action sequences were nothing special and just felt flat.

Instantly forgettable.

So it sounds like they've take matrix 2 and 3 and tried to redo those, rather than focus on the first and improved that.

I'll give it a wide miss...

I liked it, probly a tad long, and lost it's way at the end I think, but decent otherwise.

very much this. The original is, for what it is, a near perfect movie with a definite conclusion. Surely a work of unbridled genius, I thought, when I first saw it. The two sequels prove that no, the writers/directors were not savants, they merely had a decent idea and then (with the help of an excellent cast & crew) everything just happened to come together perfectly.

I used to think that it wasn’t possible for a sequel to actually detract from the original, but then these were so bad they changed my mind. Should’ve just left it alone, walked away, and no-one would’ve been any the wiser or doubted their genius.

I will watch this latest one though at some point just out of morbid curiosity, to see what new level of canine excrement they’ve managed to wring out of it!

I actually quite liked 2 and 3

+1

I see the original trilogy as one work and don't think 2 & 3 are any different to 1, enjoyed them all equally.

The reviews are a disappointment as are the comments above.  So at lunch I bought myself an early Christmas present of the 4k release of the original film (thanks hmv for having an odd offer on!).  I will continue to pretend that there is only one film....

Now where is my blue pill....

Saw it two days ago and have been mulling it over...
During the screening I was absolutely captivated, but have been up and down about it since.

Overall I liked it. Not as good as the original, but soooo much better than 2&3

Bad bits: Underused Morpheus and the other two big returning characters (not naming them just in case anyone hasn't seen it yet..), change of pace when it becomes a standard story instead of just being odd, shaven headed Keanu Reeves looking EXACTLY like Christian Bale, poor kung fu

Good bits : funny, knowing, over-the-top meta opening, Morpheus and his suits, light-handed political allegories and the new human city, ignoring most of the events in 2&3 except the ending, more realistic kung fu... yes, I know I put that in the bad bits too, but it actually fits with the idea of Neo being (at least) 20 years older and struggling to refind his old powers in the new version of the matrix. The messy, confused fight scenes lack the deliberately unrealistic computer-game choreography of the original, but actually that fits the story.

Nope. Bad. Very bad.
It feels like one of those very expensive Super Bowl adverts where they've paid has-beens a fortune to reprise their roles in a meta way.
Must be quite a long film too, I fell asleep at some point only to wake up and think 'I this thing still on?'

Very bad film.

What I couldn't get over was how the start of the film referencing the original made me realise how fantastic the opening scene was and how much it set=up without loads of talk. This one was generally poor.

Just back from seeing it, I thought it was OK, not as good as the first, but better than the second and third.

I’m midway through watching the first one(hopefully 2/3) before I watch new one Tuesday. I’m a matrix super fan after initially not getting the premise first time around 🤷‍♂️.

I enjoyed 2 and 3 still a good watch as it’s all make believe remember!!

But **** me the first one is such a stylish timeless classic !

The Meta bit towards the beginning where they are discussing how to reboot an ageing franchise 20 years later about sums up the entire film - I think it's Keanu who says something along the lines of not wanting it to be a tired rehash of the original, which is exactly what they have created IMHO.

The original was cool because it was ground breaking with bullet time and the innovative wirework/gymnastic fight scenes and the banging sound track:

When the Propellerheads kicks in during the lobby fight scene it's just plain awesome.

The new one has bullet time (as per the game remake pitch scene - "fans love bullet time"), lots of fight sequences ("fans love fight sequences") but is just missing something - no "spark". The new one seems to have a very 'movie' orchestral soundtrack (other than a few parts), maybe that's something to do with it.

Just read some of the reviews now I've seen the film - it seems that Warner Bros were the ones that really wanted to make the new film, and they basically said to Lana Wachowski "we are going to do it with or without you" - which may explain the blatant digs at WB in the meta part (and the meta part itself), as well as the post credits scene.

It leant far too hard on the origonal rather than trying to be its own thing and a real contunuation.
Or maybe that's part of the meta of it all, either that or just a lazy sequel.
Entertaining enough though.

Maybe that had something to do with it aswell, makes you think.

When I explained my disappointment to Mrs.10 about this movie this was almost exactly the reason I said the first movie worked for me and the others haven't.

Well spiderman was ace!

But it was a very packed cinema & I'm sure I'm just being up tight, but loads of people seemed to be coughing in the cinema, anyone else notice that?

I enjoyed it. It's the love story of neo and trinity, now older but still with chemistry between them. It's finding out that you don't have to win, you just have to make things better (the new city). It's acknowledging that as you get old you're not always as strong as you used to be.

Well, I thought it was brilliant. The Therapist was a great character, moving on from the Zion city to the new one, working with the machines was a great idea.
Ultimately it is a love story between Neo and Trinity, and its not about Neo but both characters.
Great film.
