Apparently unprecedented temperatures in The North Sea. Although it is all relative, this rings true with my experience as the sea off Eastern Scotland is noticeably warmer than normal.

Looks like predictions of another record year for heat in this El Niño year are being borne out.

This sudden spike in global sea surface temperatures is pretty shocking, and the full effects of El Nino have not even hit yet. How it will affect weather patterns is yet to be seen, but apparently hurricanes are already brewing in the Atlantic and will be heading west much earlier than usual.

I gather it is across the Atlantic, as well as the area around the UK, but also some areas of the ocean are cooler than usual. Whatever it is, I think it is clear that it is beyond an el Nino year.

That is just the first Londoner on holiday before they have had time to tan. 😉

Local conditions:
I have just looked now - last night was the first meaningful rain since 20th of May. We had 1.1mm of rain in that time.
April had a third of the usual rainfall (36mm actual, compared to 90-100mm average). It is properly dry and has been for 6 weeks.
Temperatures - we had averaged over 2*c warmer since April 1st.

The long range forecast for the remainder of this summer must be more of the same if the surrounding ocean is that warm.

The downpour we had last night has barely touched the sides though, bone dry again today.

I bet if you jump into the sea off Dunbar in your budgie smugglers  you will come out ten mins later wondering if the budgie escaped, the water is still nippy unlike Mallorca

I don’t really need to speculate on it as I have been in the water multiple times recently and while it obviously isn’t warm it is pretty noticeable how much warmer it is than normal.

This is pretty significant by any standards.

Warm ocean temps don't equate to 'hot weather'. It is more likely to mean more energy is available to fuel more powerful storms.
