Anyone else seen It? , I saw it this afternoon and was impressed. So many great little scenes with characters as young men / women . The casting Is superb especially the young Silvio and Junior soprano. Ray Liotta also very good.
It's obviously going to be a double header but could easily then be a mini series with another young Tony.

I thought you meant Newark in Nottinghamshire and wondered what I'd missed close to home.
Oh well...

Question - I'm desperate to see this with my partner, but she's never seen the Sopranos.. will she still see a good film, or will it make no sense?

Missed this last weekend. Saw Sweetheart and the alpinist and then had to do other stuff. Sweetheart was great. The alpinist was terrifying.

Yup I think it would stand very well as a film for someone that hasn't watched the series. It's a lot like the Scorcese gangster films of the 90's. A fair bit of background on all the characters , There are a lot of little in jokes and quotes from the series as you would imagine.

If it’s people you’re averse to I’d expect multiplex on weekday lunchtime would be like a private screening. And if it is private please keep your moistness to yourself.

It's on HBO Max from Friday, if you have a friend in the US and a VPN, which I do!

I can't wait.

I thought it was OK, but would have been better as a mini-series. The cast was good, but a lot of them were playing caricatures of Sopranos characters rather than having any real depth. Livia Soprano was excellent though. I can't imagine anyone who hasn't seen the tv show would be much interested.

Watched last night. Little chance of a spoiler as the plot was non existent.
How utterly disappointing.

It could have been so much better..

Just watched (on my own). Loved it. Was expecting more of Tony's back story, but it was really about Christopher's dad and worked brilliantly as that. Was completely absorbed all the way through. Forgot where I was

Spoiler

As a sopranos fan I liked it. As a Sopranos fan my wife didn’t. Lots of Easter eggs which made it for me. Felt more like a pilot for a tv series than a stand alone film.

How about that Anthony Soprano kid having grown into a mafia boss, but with mental issues caused by his disfunctional parents... I dunno, maybe call it The Sopranos or something 😀

watched it last night. decided to stick it on when i saw it listed just to get a flavour but ended up watching the whole thing till 01:30!

Absolutely loved it. yeah id have liked a bit more plot and a bit more action (Chase never gives us what we want... although there is one nice little reveal that answers a few questions..!) but as an absolute Sopranos fanboi and for pure nostalgia it was great.

Watched it Friday.

I really enjoyed it, it's a geekout for Sopranos nerds like me I think. I wonder how new fans would find it, there are so many oddities if you don't know the future of it.

If you haven't seen it yet and plan to, it's worth knowing that it's not the Tony Soprano origin story, he's not the focus or indeed in many of the crucial scenes. It's the story of Dickie Moltisanti, there are loads of scenes involving things you hear about in The Sopranos, some funny, some sad, lots of what could have been scenes.

Even scenes we saw in the Sopranos shown from a different prospective.

I'd love to see a series or sequel come out of it.

I found it very watchable but despite having the same characters (and theme music!) felt it lacked any of what made the TV show so compelling, so it didn't feel at all like The Sopranos to me. They even tried to shoehorn some talking therapy/philosophy bits with one of the characters but that felt very forced to me and I didn't think it worked at all. Lots of bits for the fans (which probably wouldn't mean anything if you hadn't seen the show - so a bit of an odd choice for a cinema release, I think, and I wouldn't be surprised if it performs poorly there) but although much more densely packed with action/violence than the show, seemed not to have any real substance. Agree with the caricature thing, the guy playing Silvio especially was a bit OTT 😃

That's what I said 🙂

I think the film's title hasn't helped the performance (not to mention Covid) - The poster is a real cock-up. "Oh, this title doesn't tell people it's about the Sopranos! I know, make the title tiny (who cares what it's actually called?) and slap TONY SOPRANO over the top in big letters!"
Which, as P-Jay and I have said is misleading about the film's content.
Oh well, I've seen it at the cinema anyway, at least it got a wide enough release to get down here 🙂
