These things are becoming almost normal - but it seems another 20 innocent people have lost their lives for the sake of ‘freedom’.

I can only guess how Trump is going to make this worse, but he will.

I will never understand why random civilians are the targets.
If you have a beef, it surely can't be with them and if you have a message it is surely always lost.

He was in a hotel room 2-300 metres away.

Country & Western fans only take their handguns to open air music festivals. They leave the AR-15 in the car, so they wouldn't have been able to get him.

It's interesting, the rhetoric you see on Reddit etc whenever the topic of gun control comes up is:

"I'd rather have a gun to defend myself"

Or if something happens in another country:

"If your citizens were armed this wouldn't happen as he would get shot by members of the public"

It's sad some people are this fundamentalist around gun control.

Well that makes it ok then.

Fewer people died in your cruise liner capsize than when the Titanic went down? Hardly worth mentioning.

Fewer people died in your light aircraft crash than the twin towers? We wont even bother informing the next of kin.

**** your whataboutery jamby and your initial sentence to 'prove' that you're thinking of the victims.

Other than being a member of your countries armed forces and being on a front line, I can't think of a single legitimate reason why you should be in possession of an automatic assault rifle.

The fact that you can walk in off the street and buy one (or lots) with as much ammo as you can carry is absolutely insane. They can quote the constitution all they like, it doesn't make it any less bonkers.

Yep. I'd include specialist armed police units in that as 'armed forces', but ultimately, yes.

FWIW, I'm pro gun ownership, along the lines of UK legislation, but the US attitude to guns disgusts me.

I'm in the US today, and just woken up to this news. Knowing that I'm going to be interacting with people who think owning an AR15 is some kind of 'human right' is going to be harder than usual today.

This just goes to further divide the country and plays into Trump's (tiny) hands of playing the right against the left.

There are *tards on both sides, unfortunately. However, I believe the *tard:not-*tard ratio within the alt-right is more in favour of the *tards than within the alt-left.

From a quick internet search, I don't believe any armed member of the public has ever intervened in such an incident. Kind of blows the NRA's argument out of the water doesn't it. Why don't they argue for the right to wear body armour instead?

Can't wait for Trump's response, notice nothing yet. He's still tucked upon bed.

Nevada has some of the least stringent gun laws in the United States.
People are allowed to carry weapons and do not have to register themselves as a gun-owner.
Background checks are done when people buy guns, but they are also allowed to sell them privately.
The state does not ban assault weapons, which are automatic or semi-automatic firearms, and there are no limits on buying ammunition there.

I have sympathy for the victims there, for those innocent people involved but it's hard to accept that this sort of thing is an inevitable part of virtually non existent controls on this type of weapon.

I think what Jamba is saying that you can get an equally deadly weapon (a truck) without stringent checks where guns are more restricted.

Hes a **** for bringing it up though, but no doubt congratulating himself for being so insightful and cleverer than everyone else.

A robustly enforced constitutional change is now the only option.

All fully automatic weapons MUST be prohibited.
Perhaps even semi-auto in the larger calibres (>.22")

Average yearly deaths by firearms: 13,000+. Bloody ridiculous.

I'm not as clever him but it would seem to me it wouldn't be reasonable to stop people hiring vans but it would seem reasonable to me to not sell machine guns to people with mental health issues , or anyone really .
I just can't understand the mindset . If they didn't manage to change anything after sandyhook when it was children then I doubt this will change anything but you know that if it was a Muslim doing the shooting it would be used as a justification for travel bans and all kinds of other rash measures

Nevada is a free for all

Machine Guns
It is lawful to possess, purchase or sell a machine gun or silencer that is legally registered and possessed in compliance with all federal laws and regulations.

Edit for link https://www.nraila.org/gun-laws/state-gun-laws/nevada/

Edit for clarity
I think most people would agree that banning something that can fire what this guy did in that time is sensible - not getting into the semantics of hiding behind semi/fully etc.

I arrived in Vegas the day after one of the last shootings. When we landed mid-morning, the traffic was bad and the taxi driver said there had been a shooting.

We eventually found out that it was gang related. There had been a dispute at the Aria, so the guy chased after him in traffic down the strip, opened fire on his car, killed him and the car drove into a taxi killing another two people.

One of the guys who was telling us this said that it was the first time in his 20+ year stint that he'd seen a part of the strip closed.

I'd have to echo though, it felt like a very safe place. To wake up to this is just mind-boggling.

Felt safe?

Nevada’s gun death rates are among the worst in the nation
In Nevada, a person is killed with a gun every 20 hours.
Nevada is among the deadliest states for gun violence. From 2005 to 2014, Nevada had the 10th-highest rate of gun deaths of any state, with a rate of 14.7 gun deaths for every 100,000 people. This rate was 44 percent higher than the national average.
Nevadans are particularly at risk for gun-related suicides. Nevada had the fifth-highest rate of gun suicides in the country from 2005 to 2014: 10.3 gun suicides per 100,000 people.
Nevada is one of the 21 states where gun deaths exceed motor vehicle-related deaths.

my mistake- looks like it's ok to sell them if they were registered prior to May 19, 1986.
There's only 182,629 of those, thankfully.

There's bunch of other rules regarding automatic guns that 'are not for sporting purposes' which can only be owned by dealers or law enforcement.

Well, I should say I felt safe in the ignorance of the gun laws etc.

I suppose in Vegas (especially in the middle of the strip), it's not as obvious.

When I went to the Clark County place to get a marriage license, it looked very rough up there. I've seen on other programs etc how run down it looks when you get away from the middle.

This is another sad but inevitable event

You can also make your own automatic or semi automatic weapon... A few of the guys I work with have done that. It turns out that at east in this state it is legal (well legal enough) as long as you don't sell it...

They are terrified of each other here so feel the need to protect themselves from the government, police and each other...

They have the amount of violence and death that they want in my opinion. Today there will probably be a prayer meeting at work where people say this is the will of Jesus and that the only way to protect people will be to arm everyone and get rid of the socialists and gays who are causing this moral decline...

Yup. Automatic weapons made before 1986 are legal - including this

Boggles the mind.

The shooter sounded like he was firing a belt-fed M60 or something, the crack that the bullets make when they are close and the sound of them slapping the tarmac could be heard in that video - truly horrible.

How on earth can anyone think there could ever be a need for citizens to protect themselves from the government and police? It may have been appropriate in the 18th Century but there’s no way it could ever be relevant to the concept of democratic modern government.

blows the NRA's argument out of the water doesn't it

After a long, dark history of mass shootings in the US I’ve concluded there is absolutely no point in arguing or debating with the Pro-Gun lobby, none, zero, zilch point.

The reason is they won’t tell the truth, it’s a fight to them - others want to take away their ability to make money from pain, suffering and death that’s it and they’ll say anything to try to sell the idea that it’s not a sort of collective insanity that allows this sort of thing to keep happening.

The truth is there are very few reason why a personal or organisation wouldn’t want more gun control:

1) I make lots of money from guns, I want to keep doing so.
2) I am mentally deficient and scared because I fear the unknown and the ‘bad guys’ my chosen media outlet tells me about. The feeling of power I get from my guns makes me happy, I don’t want to feel scared again.
3) I like to make holes in things further than my reach, either targets or animals I may or may not eat afterwards. I’d never dream of using it on another human unless I really really had to, which is unlikely as I keep this dangerous weapon kept locked away as I know it’s more dangerous for me to have it to hand, than not.

Sadly the 3s are very rare, and usually the most likely to accept that machine guns have no place off the battlefield and usually have no issue with control as long as they can keep their hunting rifle or target pistol.

You can’t argue with liars unless you’re prepared to call them such - there’s no point reasoning their arguement is false - because they lll just think of another lie.

I like country music and there were some good artists playing that festival. Some, however are dire and some both dire and worrying. Like 'em or not they're an insight into the American way of life like no other. Here's one I wouln't go see:

And just a link you don't have to click so you know what sensible Americans are up against

After a long, dark history of mass shootings in the US I’ve concluded there is absolutely no point in arguing or debating with the Pro-Gun lobby, none, zero, zilch point.

this.

In 2012 someone walked into a primary school in Sandy Hook and murdered 20 innocent children. The response? On balance, they RELAXED GUNS LAWS FURTHER.

http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2013/04/post-newtown-states-loosen-gun-restrictions.html

So what could persuade the USA to embrace gun control? What possible event could make the gun lobby say "ok, this is enough, we have to do something", if the murder of 20 six- and seven-year-olds is just something to be shrugged off as part of the price of the 2nd amendment?

They will never do it. If Sandy Hook wasn't the tipping point, it will never happen. 🙁
