MrsIHN is currently in Manchester for a few days on a course. She's staying in the middle (Princess Street) and wants to go for a run in the evenings. She doesn't know Manchester at all really. She'd like to
a) do about 5-10km
b) not get lost
c) not get mugged
Any ideas for simple-to-navigate routes that she can do? She's thinking about running along the canal to Salford Quays, is that a good a idea or not?
Lots of people doing laps of Salford Quays, canal looks sensible when I go past on the tram but it's also only a few stops down to here
Tell her not to run along the canal under Piccadilly Station; we met some quite unsavoury characters lingering in the gloom under there a few years ago. If I was in Princess Street and hadn't got a bike I would run down Oxford Road to Whitworth Park, that being in the centre of the studentey area and some of the pavements nice and wide and not too crowded.
Buy why run? She can join Mobikes and hire a bike for 50p for half an hour and get there much quicker.
I ride down the bridgewater canal south from the city centre most days and there's lots of people, both men and women out running solo. I've never had any bother.
I sometimes run to work in Salford quays from Piccadilly station. I tend to follow the tram route across to castle field and then down the canal. Once you get to hotel football you can easily cut across to media city to run around the canal basin to mix it up and then back up the ship canal and cut over to the bridge water just before castle field
Cheers all.
She could try running up to piccadilly station and getting on the Ashton canal (not Rochdale) and running down to the Veledrome and back (or keep on going) its more flowing than going the other way towards Castlefield etc -the canal towpath is currently closed near Deansgate station
I'd be less happy with my Mrs running down the ashton canal as far as the velodrome, even the Geese are a bit rough down there compared to the Bridgewater. The less said about the Rochdale canal the better 😀

Interesting spot that isn't it?
