Not till end of October but going to a gig at the Student Union in Manchester. Living right down south deciding whether to drive or fly (seem to be very cheap flights from my local airport). If we do fly, how easy is it to get to the city centre from the airport and how long does it take? Also any recommendations for places nearby the union to stay overnight before heading back the next day? Cheers

There's tram and trains from the airport direct to Piccadilly. From there it's walkable or if you're lazy you're on the busiest bus route in europe.

The students' union(s) are all easily walkable to/from the city centre, which is readily accessible by train/tram/bus from the airport

From what i've been told, the tram goes properly round the houses so faster to take the train.

Train to airport about 25mins.

Tram will be probably double that.

as per IHN - dunno about right next to the union(s) but the Oxford Road corridor is permanently bus filled so you could get a premier inn/whatever in the centre and then you can go after gig boozing in the northern quarter and stumble back to piccadilly for the train back to the airport in the morning

As others have mentioned get the train from the airport. You can walk directly there from the airport.
Plenty of Premier Inn's in the city centre. The Union is a short taxi ride away straight down Oxford road, you're talking £10 ish, or a bus for a couple of quid.
I'd fly not drive if I had the choice, its easy enough and well connected.

If you're paying £10 from Piccadilly to Oxford Road in a taxi you're being robbed!
