going out for a family meal tomorrow, place we are going is one of the grill pit/smokehouse type place.
so earlier tonight my daughter showed me the place on fb, and I noticed the man v food challenges.

now In the past, I have been a greedy bastid, no getting away from that, a whole chicken has been scoffed in a sitting on many occasions, but why the heck would someone attempt to eat a 50oz burger, with a lb in weight of chips, a huge bowl of 'slaw'?? and 2 pint icecream milkshake

WTF!!!

We tried two man vs food challenges at Hickorys American Diner, one 6lb burger challenge and one 12 mini burger challenge.

Failed both miserably but it was a laugh.

Because no one ever lost money underestimating the intelligence of the general public.

like drinking more than anybody else and driving faster than anybody else, eating more than anybody else means you are a 'real man' and 'poofters' 'lightweights' and 'southerners' will be scared of your prowess while women will be impressed and gladly bear your children.
it's a cultural hangover from the last century that's no longer relevant in the modern world.

pursuits that are for oneself not for show (or they should be) you have to ask would so many people go for a food challenge in an empty room without an audience?

if you are going to do it properly you need to take a few pointers from south Africa's 'boasters' 😯

Why on earth would somebody attempt to ride a bike round a muddy field for an hour faster than a load of other people?

I find it a bit sad really. I get the whole macho competition things etc but it's just such a pointless thing to excel at. At least being good at cycling promotes a healthy lifestyle (if you're not full of EPO)

Given the level of hunger in some countries I find such a needless display pretty galling.

I find man vs food challenges immensely distasteful given there are millions of people starving in this world.

Sh1t tv programme too.

If you are concerend about the starving millions, you could sell one of your bikes and end the money to alleviate their suffering, or you could lobby your MP to get him to ask about increasing foreign food aid, or you could develop strong and convincing arguments against those who believe we should reduce foreign aid, or you could sit on your arse and beak on aout other people's choices

I like watching it. Its quite funny and harmless. I think it actually shows how much enjoyment and good spirit there is in those places. A lot of the places I think "wouldn't mind going there to try that". But perhaps not the full challenge plates tho.

Because deep down we are all pretty eccentric.

Interestingly one world class competitive eater, Sonya Thomas, is a pretty modest 98lbs and stretches her stomach with water in the days leading up to a competition to build up the capacity.

What really is the problem with these Man v's Food challenges? In real terms the percentages of diners that take up these challenges must be tiny. Some people enjoy it and some people really need to lighten up! 🙄

Just done 40 miles offroad, so circa 4000 calories.

The couple of beers and a plate of chips at the pub just vanished. The Missus had made a cake (Victoria Sponge) when I got home, it's now 3/4 of a cake. 🙂

Good job dinner is in a couple of hours, as I'm starving!
