It's lazy in terms of numbers of characters they used as a headline ('Man 27 shot dead by gunman on bicycle' would have been better) but you have to have a pretty thin skin to feel some sort of outrage and guilt by association because you also ride a bike.

A cyclist shot someone

When was the last time you heard ‘pedstrian mugs old lady’ or ‘man shot dead by pedestrian’? ‘Runner burgles house’?

why is the mode of transport relevant?

What’s so wrong with the headline ?

He was shot near a parked car. Why was that not included?

I’d have been worried if it had been on ladybower loop, just another day in parts of Liverpool

The press does like to use language like that for the purpose of creating neat pigeon holed stereo types and demonising them..

If you ask me, a cyclist is someone who rides a bike in some sort of professional capacity, everyone else are just people who happen to be riding a bike.

I don't identify as a 'driver' because I have have a driving licence any more than I identify as a cyclist because I own a bike.

What’s so wrong with the headline ?

Do you think a drive by shooting would call the perpetrator a motorist?

Yep the BBC seem to make a big thing about the Cyclist bit in the headline

Yet the local paper make little of the mode of transport until line 7 of the report The offender is believed to have been riding a pedal bike

Those cyclists are evil swine, they have also been known to run red lights AND ride two abreast.

It's time we put an end to this scourge of modern society.

At least the cyclist was wearing hi-viz. Now if he was also wearing a helmet there are a few on here we can rule out.

Potentially misleading headline (in a way that will get more clicks), but is it really demonising cyclists as a group?

I wouldn't be too quick to demand correction, might make some drivers think twice before their next close pass.

Do you think a drive by shooting would call the perpetrator a motorist?

But it would have been described as a drive by shooting indicating that the mode of transport for the attack was a car - and the mode of attack is relevant. I've head of shootings described as being perpetrated by gunmen on motorcycles; would a shooting by someone on a bicycle have riled people less that by a cyclist?

Some folk might remember the shooting of Rhys Jones (also in Liverpool) who was shot by someone on a mountain bike; the shooter turned out to be a youngster of 16 who wouldn't have been able to drive (gang related I believe and the poor child that was killed wasn't the intended target).

To put a more positive spin on it, if drivers think we’re all potentially tooled up and happy to go postal with said firearm, then maybe we’d have less close passes and get treated with a bit more respect on the road 😃

Don’t close pass in Liverpool. Retribution is swift and dis-proportionate.

How many gang members wear a hi viz jacket? Would be a fantastic disguise for a commute time ride-by but a Sunday?

Bloody cyclists; jumping red lights, shooting people dead and riding 2-abreast. Make them pay road tax!

I'm not sure there's any guilt by association but it helps support the gammon agenda that there's something "different" about "cyclists" and it's not their awesomeness.

It's the conscious or unconscious attaching of a separate social grouping to someone based on their transport in (usually) a negative context.

Round here if the paper writes about a mugger who got away on a bike it's "cyclist mugs little old lady".

If Pete the life long cyclist and his mates just cycled through Iran to raise money for cancer then it's "Plucky fireman Pete and team help kill cancer".

It's this lopsidedness that causes concern for me.

The language of the headline defines the killer as a "cyclist" rather than a "murderer" or "drug dealer" or "troubled ex". The language incorrectly attachets the word cyclist as in some way causatory not incidental.

Could've been a tractor, bus or even a train! Following your logic it should've been described as a ride by shooting. That would keep it ambiguous and have readers guessing whether it was a skateboarder, unicyclist etc.

Well, even in Liverpool shooting people isn't the norm, but I understand that in the world of drug-dealing criminality riding a mountain bike is pretty common. The last Liverpool shooting that I remember hitting the headlines was the young lad Rhys Jones. The police tracked down the killer in part through the Specialized Hard Rock he was riding at the time. "Gunman on bike" would have been a better wording but that might imply more than is known.

Hmmm now let me go and commit this murder. I wonder, should I drive there? Heavens no, I have no driving license, that could be illegal and dangerous! Besides I don't own a car and have no means of stealing one.

Oh, er...
