I've been volunteered to help a friend of a friend (no euphemism) to remove something that's causing pop-ups on her computer. I have no idea what to do, but I've been volunteered, ** sighs **
Consequently, simple and hopefully effective advice would be gratefully received.
Thanks....

Malwarebytes was brilliant

I can't remember if the computer needs to be an bootable state for that

If the computer won't boot then try one of the virus checkers AVG for example that lets you boot from a memory stcik and scan for viruses with the PC working in Linux from the memory stick

much easier than it sounds

You may need to go to into the bios on boot up to tell it to boot from USB

Spybot - Search & Destroy

I have used this to good effect to remove pop ups and page redirecting 🙂

I also would use ccleaner, and replace any antivirus with MS security essentials.
It can also be worth uninstalling ALL addons in browsers, or even a freh install.

Say "I have no idea what I'm doing, [s]ask on a bike forum[/s] Google it yourself"? Malware removal can be a black art, you could "have a go", remove 95% of it and then the other 5% steals her bank details. Which, of course, will then be your fault.

You need to know what you're dealing with before you can hope to fix it. Look in Add / Remove Programs (XP) or Programs and Features (W7) for things that look like toolbars or search "helpers".

Don't overlook System Restore, it can sometimes take you back to a point in time before the infection was present.

Malwarebytes is a great starting block; even if it doesn't completely disinfect it, it'll tell you what's on there.

Reset default settings within the web browser.

I also would use ccleaner,

Whenever my car doesn't start, I hoover the carpets.

and replace any antivirus with MS security essentials.

... unless she's running Windows XP, in which case that's a really bad idea.

Yes, basically I'm going to go and run either Malwarebites or SpyBot, and then walk away, after giving health warnings etc etc. Bizarrely her partner is a coder but won't help her out. I might go and kick him whilst I'm there as it should be his job to keep her happy 😯

Did this just turn into a 70s porn movie?

"Hi, I hear you have something that needs servicing... does your husband have a 3.5" floppy we could borrow? Yeah, I've brought my own disk, it's big and hard... have you got somewhere I can stick my pendrive? Yeah, just slide it in there baby..." *bow chicka wah wah*

What are the odds of that?
