We're having a week in the hills (staying just outside Parque Natural Los Alcornocales), flying in/out of Malaga and hiring a car. The flight home is early so we fancy staying in Malaga for a couple of nights and exploring the old city and stuff around town for a day.
I would have thought it would be tricky to stay in a picturesque part of the city and get parking for the hire car, one suggestion would be to stay at an airport hotel and bus/commute in to the city.
suggestions or experiences?
And anyone been to that are have some favourite places to go, things to see or do? We're not taking bikes but will be up for some days hiking in the hills.
Are you returning the car at the airport? Maybe you could return it a couple of days earlier and then stay in the city centre itself.
Commute from airport to city centre is pretty easy in the local train, about 15 minutes.
We spent a week in the city back in February and, as Miguelo has said, it’s really easy to get from the airport by train or taxi - I’d guess it’s a lot easier than finding parking (unless you go for one of the large posh hotels near the sea front). Nice walk up to the old fortress above the town BTW.

2nd that, we have been a few times and really enjoy it. We usually get the train from down the coast.
The Harbour is now quite nice, especially in the sunshine, and the shopping isn't bad. The shopping area reminds me of a little Rome.
The gardens near the bullring (and across from the Harbour) are also worth a quick visit.
Not done the hills around Malaga though.
We used to spend a lot of holidays in el chorro north of Malaga for walking nice area and the Camino through the gorge is open now
You don't need a car in the city centre, everything is walkable and it's flat. Eat in either of the Cervantes restaurants (same business), they are superb and the are just around the corner from La Tranca which is a great and buzzing bar. Opposite El Tapeo Cervantes is a very bizarre bar full of religious regalia etc, top spot. Picasso and the Glass museums are worth a visit. Barbecued fish is available on the beach. The Roman remains in the city centre are interesting. Look out for lunchtime performances in the flamenco museum. Oddly, Malaga seems to be overlooked by foreign tourists so it has a more Spanish feel to it. We've been a few times for short breaks and I would go back like a shot. Good choice. Taxi from the airport was about £25.
