Apparently it needs a bl1830 but when I search for that it throws up a bl1850.
Will that work?

Makita batteries BL1830, BL1840, BL1850 are the same fit but different capacities *. 3Ah, 4Ah, and 5Ah. Any will work but bigger is better for a saw, the LXT range is great for battery compatibility. Get the BL1850 if it isn't too pricey

*Actually not exactly the same, there are some little tabs that stop you putting small capacity batteries in tools that need a big one but for that saw the 3, 4 and 5 will fit

It might be more than you need but Screwfix are selling a Makita drill with 2 5Ah batteries, case and charger for £140. I don't think you can buy the batteries on their own for that price.

5ah batteries are about £70, problem with that kit above is it will be the slow charger.
if your using a saw quite a bit you'll either need the fast charger or more batteries, fast charger being the cheaper option.

Is this a tool you already have and need a new battery for? Or are you buying bare and want a battery and charger to go with it?.

All the current LXT batteries of all capactities are interchangeable.... but - if its quite an old model there can be an issue with compatability with larger capacity batteries - either the tool or the battery (I forget which)  has a little tab that prevents anything over 3Ah being inserted into early versions of LXT tools. But this is only the case with early models - anything that predates the launch of the 4ah and larger batteries - but the DSS610Z is, I think, the first circular saw they did for LXT batteries - so if its an old one (lLXT has been around 2005 but the the 4ah batteries and larger didnt start to appear until 2014)  and a correspondingly old charger -  it could be an issue and larger capacity batteries might not fit.

There was a spec change for the LXT batteries early on and this is usually denoted with an embossed  star symbol on the both the top of the battery and the plate on the tool the battery clips to, or a yellow plate on the base of the tool.  If the saw (and charger)  has that symbol / yellow plate any battery should work with it

You can get the older batteries without the star logo to fit with a little fettling.
