Doing loads in the garden and need a step for the back door.
I've got a spare oak sleeper that I thought I could cut in half (lengthways) and screw together to make a decent sized step.
One thought is that this may get a bit slick if wet so and ideas on how to put some grip on it that looks nice?
We have a oak sleeper in our garden. Can confirm: it gets really slippy. Also has disintegrated quite quickly. Watching this thread with interest.
I have an outbuilding with wooden steps. I've just fitted some screw on grip strips from Safe Tread. They are made from a tough fibreglass in different widths, lengths and colours. They are pretty robust, I can see them lasting for the life of the stairs and they will screw off easily when I need to treat the wood.
I used some old woodstain and sand mixed in.
Lasted three years fine.
2 years ago we used a Cuprinol non-slip decking stain on some decking (surprise) and some pressure-treated sleepers. Ao long as the sleeper isn't creosote dipped or previously treated this should do adhere ok. 2 years on it still wasn't slippery. We had a build-up of crap in the decking grooves as to be expected but otherwise good.
This year I redid all the decking in no-nonsense stuff from Screwfix and it was far easier to apply and half the price.
Here are the safe tread strips I mentioned above.
Decking oil seems pretty good, just applied to our decking and it's definitely not slippy!
