Is there a way to make a white background to a very simple logo transparent. using common programs such as publisher or powerpoint?

Figured it out. Sorry for the wasted internet space!

In publisher, insert picture, when the picture has just been inserted go to picture tools, recolour, set transparent colour. Click the white background... that's it. Too easy really.

Ah, cool

I wondered if it had to do with PNGs or something; they always seem to have transparent backgrounds

PNG files have a colour for transparent where jpg doesn't, hence most PNG files have transparent backgrounds or they'd be saved as jpg.

Not sure your logic entirely follows. Yes PNG supports transparency where JPEG doesn't but PNG is also a lossless format so may be preferable for other reasons. If your image is of a logo or graphic rather that a photo you'll probably want lossless compression in order to avoid ugly compression artefacts.

The method you used works for gard transitions to the white. However anything that fades into the white when you put the transparent image on a strong colour it will look crap.

PNG is a much better format for 'simpler' images (i.e. not photo levels of detail or size).
