On Monday evening I went out for a run. This is not something I do regularly, maybe about a dozen times a year when the weather puts me off riding but I want to exercise.
After about 20 minutes my palms started itching really badly, I got home 5 minutes later, washed my hands and took an antihistamine. Within 15 minutes my body was covered with hives, I was itching like crazy then my lips and tongue started to swell. So I went to A&E and they put a cannula in, loaded me with drugs and kept me in for the night. I had something similar but a lot more mild last April after riding at Afan - that just subsided after taking an antihistamine.
I'm going to discuss this with my GP, but I wondered if anyone has any experience of this? I've had a google, but as ever web based diagnosis and advice is always a bit contradictory. It's quite concerning as I often ride alone in quite remote areas so it wouldn't be quite as simple as Monday night when I was less than a mile away from A&E.
Thanks
Were you aware of being bitten or stung by anything before the symptoms started, as on both occasions you were outdoors ?
Very difficult to offer anything without going through any common factors there may have been which may, or may not, have brought it on.
EDIT: sounds like you definitely need to carry some anti-histamine and possibly adrenaline just in case you are stuck in the middle of nowhere.
You're actually allergic to running. I am too, though not as bad, I always get aches and pains when I do it though.
I'm possibly allergic to something in my sweat, bizarre as that sounds. I'll often get little red spots all over me but especially concentrated in high sweat areas or under backpack straps after riding.
Anti-histamine lessens it but it happens regardless of whether I've taken one before hand or not.
There don't seem to be any common factors. One was warm sunny, and dry, the other cold wet and dark. Definitely no bites either time and no common foods either time. One was running and one was biking. I'll see what the GP says about emergency medication but I would have thought something like an epipen will be in my trail pack soon!
boriselbrus - I used to run in my teens for school, borough & at club level. Training was at least 3 times a week. Not very often, perhaps a couple of times a year, I would feel itchy when I got home from a run and by the time I had finished showering would be covered head to to in itchy hives. It never got so bad that my tongue started swelling though. I never recall being bitten by insects, but it was always during or shortly after heavy rain and relatively warm weather.
I never found out the cause, but always assumed it was a reaction to sweat when my body was working at it's limit & perhaps the humid conditions meant that my sweat didn't evaporate as normal...
neninja - I get the same thing, which is what makes me think the above is sweat related. On holiday in hot places I would always find that my chest and round my armpits would get sore & red which I often attributed to lack of sufficient sun cream. Last yr though it was really bad and I had to go to a local chemist while on hols in Turkey. He confirmed it was a sweat rash which is exacerbated by the sun cream blocking the skin pores increasing the problem as the sweat still irritates under the skin.
Once I was told this & thinking back to cycling holidays in Spain, I always get sore, itchy chest particularly around my arm pits which I assumed was due to a combination of sun burn when off the bike & chafing due to a heavier pack than normal when on the bike. But, I reckon it is this heat rash/sweat problem.
I am as yet to find a cure. This summer in Turkey I used a Boots suncream specifically labelled as reducing the possibility of sweat rash as it doesn't block pores. But, it didn't work.
