I sleep terribly, first three hours or so of waking up, anxiety, falling back to sleep - usually 3- 4 times and then boom asleep!

Wake up tired

I've great "sleep hygiene" - no coffee/beer etc, no screen time before bed, read, bath etc so nothing more I can do according to the NHS website!

Is it worth buying some of these? Or just an insta fad? What's the science behind it?

I supplement magnesium anyway, but if it is anxiety and/or thoughts running through your head etc, you could try St Johns wort or 5htp.

Dumb question perhaps - what's causing the anxiety?

Mirtazapine was great to get me sleeping two years ago when suffering anxiety, within ~20mins of taking it I was so drowsy, off to bed and next thing it was ~1000. Unfortunately, it left me drowsy until late afternoon.

I go to bed tired, straight to sleep no issues but then wake up 90 mins after dropping off every night. Then have a 2 hour anxiety riddled time then drop off again shattered

Same here, tried magnesium, made no difference at all.

What worked for me, is 2 ibuprofen before bed. It defies logic, as ibuprofen is clinically proven to interrupt sleep(in everyone but me, it seems) , but it works for me.

I should add, I don't have any pain or anything obvious that you would think ibuprofen might help with

Weird, What's your rationale for trying it?

Magnesium is good for general healing as well. I take Magnesium, Vitamin D and Turmeric from 'Nutrition Geeks' - it's not expensive and you get a lot.   Started taking it after I broke my pelvis, then paid for a Vit D test to discover it was very low.

I just took it one night for another reason and noticed I slept much better.

Codeine knocks me out !  The instructions for Magnesium say take it before bed if you want it to help with sleep, or take it in the morning for energy.  Remember it can take a while to help and nothing is a miracle cure. It's not expensive.

Certain sorts of magnesium can be very hard to digest for some people, (citrate, I think?)so treat with care. There's also something to do with how your body absorbs it, which means that the best ones to use are bisglycinate. I can't remember the reasoning though!

I take Pue Encapsulation stuff from Amazon at a highish dose (3 per day) for another condition (chronic migraine), as recommended by a consultant. It definitely helps.

I'm sorry that your suffering from anxiety, it's utterly crippling. At the risk of sounding preachy, have you spoken to a counsellor about it? It might be a good avenue to explore. My wife suffers badly, and her sleeping has been much improved by a combination of therapy and propanol has had a huge positive impact on her sleep.

I find the ZMA (zinc mag and b12) made a difference to sleep.
I haven’t slept well for years- same pattern as you really.

When I wake up now, I go downstairs, have a cup of tea(no caffeine) cuddle the dog and put the radio on, I can drift off on the sofa.

Writing stuff down can help get it out of your head and stop the loop at night.

Rain noise, wind sounds all help focus the mind off the stuff in your head.

IANE I’m writing this at 3.00am

You need to deal with the anxiety mate.  I had awful anxiety a couple of years ago - counseling helped

I take 1 of those tablets that @fossy posted. Meant to take 2 but the tablet is huge and I just chuck all my daily tablets and vitamins in my mouth in 1 go in the morning.

I've diet issues so no energy benefits (my diet issue is I'm just not eating enough of the right stuff in proper portions, so my energy levels are high and don't get sustained)...

I was getting amazing sleeps, but work is going very south just now and I'm not sleeping well due to that...but it will settle and improve.

Promethazine (an antihistamine) can help with sleep.

Wasn't a fan myself but it's used in hospitals before a sedative like zopiclone is used.
