You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
So got me a smart turbo and I need to update my Macbook air, as I've forever been putting it off.
I click to download and it takes about 15 mins to download, so far so good. The timer then changes to say 'calculating', I assume as it's preparing to install. That was at 11pm last night, we were in the same situation at 7am this morning as I left for work. No prompts to do anything, just seems to be hanging.
A quick google seems to suggest that it does take ages, but also could be referring to the actual install, and I'm not there yet. Still, 8+ hours?!
What obvious thing have I done wrong/Is it forever stuck in the past?
How full is the storage?
If you're moving from Mojave there's some wholesale OS file moving taking place with most of it going into a secure enclave. If you're tight on space it's going to take ages. If you can interrupt the process and move some files off the machine to create some more room to allow the installer to move things around.
Cheers @Sandwich Something's not right here. Still calculating.
Thought I had plenty of free space, having taken a load of movies off the HDD, but when I've gone to look at available space it says I have 50 odd GB of movie data on there which amongst all the other stuff on there, means I've only 6gb spare. Hmm...
I guess the question is 'How do I delete something that isn't there anymore?'
Running *cough* El Capitan 10.11.6. Never underestimate my capacity to put something off....
Empty the trash?
I suspect the issue is that it’s having to copy each block to a new (encrypted) sector on the HDD. With limited free space the page files won’t be efficiently. MacOS can really struggle when there is limited hard drive space.
Emptying the trash has helped a little, however the 52GB of movie data is still showing despite it all supposedly being off the HDD.
Success!! in getting the movie data off anyway, seems there was a random file tucked away somewhere with it on, only a full search of the system would find it.
Acres of space now! Lets see if that helps!
It's going to take a few hours going from that far back. A demonstration of hard work pays off tomorrow while procrastination pays off today!
