We have a vinyl printing machine. We have a few fonts that we use.
Since the update if I try to use them I get the spinning wheel of death.
I tried to get round this by doing the design on an iPad and putting it in the cloud.
When I went on the MacBook to customize the design it said "font not loaded will default to Arial"
I would like Snell Roundhouse and I want it bold.
Is Cricut having a fit or my MacBook?
A lot of font management software gets nuked with recent updates. Check your font files aren't already on your hard disk, but no longer installed, due to a third party font manager no longer running. Font files don't tend to get deleted by updates. Search for the font name in Finder... drop the file(s), if found, onto Font Book.
Font files don’t tend to get deleted by updates.
Surely they would if they were system fonts (as Snell used to be)?
Not if they were using font management software that the update has nixed.
eg, I just searched, and that font is still on my HD at:
/Users/kelvin/FontExplorer X/Font Library/S/Snell Roundhand
I'm not going to reinstall it though... not one I'm going to miss.
My recollection of updating without font management software in place is that old system fonts were moved to a new directory, so they were no longer active, rather than deleted.
Not if they were using font management software that the update has nixed.
Agreed, but given the OPs lack of knowledge, it is my assumption that he was simply using a nice font he could find on his computer (ie a system font) and the recent OS upgrade the OP performed has meant that font is no longer in the system.
I just searched, and that font is still on my HD at:

My suspicion is that the OP isn't using third-party font management software (I don't either TBF, I don't see the point). The fact you are doing suggests you will have a different experience.
Edit: Saying that, I can still see it on my Mac (running Catalina). It is in System > Library > Fonts > Supplemental
It is still part of the install
OP - perhaps (and this is a stab in the dark) the font has changed ID code so the font you were using isn't there (because the ID has changed), but if you select the replacement font then try to change it within the program you are using can you see it as a font within the selector when you scroll through available fonts?
I have had this innumerable times with self-installed fonts but never with system fonts though.
Have followed the process above and Snell Bold is there. Went on Cricut and used Snell Bold and all is fine.
The Snell Bold Italic is a Cricut option but when I try to use it I get the spinning wheel, this is obviously because it's not in the mac library.
I wish Cricut would only give me the options that are available to me.
Thanks for sorting that, I was on the verge of buying a new laptop.
Hurrah!
^^^ often a program will allow you to choose options like italic, bold etc even if the font isn’t installed. Sometimes the font will even render on screen but can’t be printed.
Glad you are sorted though 👍

I don't believe this story at all. Never in the history of computer discussions on STW has a Mac failed to update seamlessly - it just doesn't happen. Are you sure your Macbook isn't a Windows PC?

It updated okay, the font ID had simply changed. If it was a PC it would still be updating right now so he'd not even be in a position to check to see if everything was working as expected. 😉

The updating part is fine. It's when you have to reboot after the update that you need to cross your fingers and settle in for a bit of a wait.
A whole bunch of changes happened to font book in Catalina. Many fonts were shifted to a “moved files” folder or some such. Some just disappeared.

Catalina was disappointing on so many fronts. Slow finder, USB recognition, NAS connection stability on SMB , ...
playing with the beta of Big Sur. so far there are beta glitches, but basic things seem back on track.
using Win10 for work. I still favour Catalina over that.
