I haven't used the etrex for following new routes very often, but am doing more so at the moment. I am using a MacBook Pro that I bought last year, and a few of weeks ago it took a couple of attempts at connecting the Garmin to the MacBook so that it showed up on my desktop and I could transfer my routes.

Over the weekend it consistently didn't work, I restarted the MacBook, the USB cable is fine, the ports are fine. The Garmin is there if I look in system information on the Mac, but doesn't appear on the desktop. I have googled and can see that there are some issues, likely with Mac OS. I have tried all the suggestions given but nothing has worked. I got round it ultimately by using my old 2013 Macbook which Mr B has installed Linux onto, no problems at all. Good to have a plan B, but I want to be able to use my new MacBook.

Anyone else had this problem and got any solutions? 🙂

I think the Etrex uses a micro SD card? An alternative might just be to use a card reader. I have an Anker adapter that plugs straight into my Macbook Air and provides usb ports along with SD card slots. It's been invaluable for stuff like this.

Thank you @butcher, it does have a micro SD card and we tried that. The card reader didn't show up on the Mac either, but might be worth giving it another go. I'm not sure what brand it is. My Mac is running Sequoia 15.3.2, would this make a difference and if so what OS is yours?

When attaching an external device there is sometimes a pop up which asks you to confirm whether to allow this device to connect. I read recently that sometimes that pop up appears and disappears before you can read it let alone click on it. The fix may be this:

In system setting go to "Privacy & Security", scroll all the way down. Change "Allow accessories to connect" to "Ask Every Time".

You can also use Disk Utility to check if an external drive is loading.

Also for years there have been tales of USB cables only working one way round. I have resolutely refused to believe this but I have one audio interface which will only connect with the cable a particular way round!!. So, er, go figure.

Oh - I'm on 15.3.2

Have garmin changed the file system meaning it no longer appears in finder?  Sure I saw something about this, I will have a quick search

Maybe not applicable to the etrex but this is what I was thinking of

Thank you slow old man, I have made that change but not had chance to check yet. The disk utility confirms that the garmin drive has mounted, but it doesn’t show in finder or the desktop. Cable to link the two has different ends so I can’t get it wrong! Hopefully the way round that your audio cable works is the way round that it sounds the best 😉

thank you for the you tube link rubber Buccaneer.
