2017 Macbook Air
MacOS reports battery has had 149 cycles and is in normal condition
Of late the battery seems to be dying much more quickly than it used to
Anything I can try short of buying a new battery?
Would think 149 cycles is not that many?

they do fade quite fast - 149 cycles doesn't seem that much but do you always plug in, or do you allow to run down to flat.
I tried to replace my own battery - and buggered the whole MacBook. I got it revived by a specialist but do make sure you "ground" yourself before touching anything near the battery.

Pattern replacement batteries are rubbish

149 is not many at all.

If your health is reported as 'normal' I think that means >80% of its design capacity. I.e. battery should be at least 80% of what it was when new. If you want to look more closely, download CoconutBattery.

It's more likely that you're running more stuff in the background and running the battery down sooner.

I'm having this with my 2016 Air, shuts down anywhere between 85% and 60%.

Just in case it’s useful, have you given it time since it’s last lot of updates?

My MacBook is three / four years old and initially when I’d updated the operating system the battery life suddenly became shocking. It took a few weeks, but it’s now better than ever and will go all day unplugged...

That does sound quite early for it be going 'off'. Not sure what to suggest except a restart.

Might be worthwhile resetting the SMC as well.

if that fails, I replaced (and transferred the usefulness of) our 15" 2012 MacBook pro with a battery and kit from ifixt. Couple of exciting moments in the process as per below, but turned out OK. 9yrs old and still trucking like a champ.

I have similar problems. Took it to the Apple store in Exeter for initial diagnostics, couldn’t find anything.
They offered to do a more thorough instore diagnostic for free if i left it with them. Never got round to it.
If second round of diagnostics didn’t fix it a new battery is circa £300. Probably not worth it on a three year old plus machine.
Been loyal to apple for laptops and phones for a while. Reconsidering that due to crappy batteries in all of them...

If you do need a new battery pretty simple to do cost me £45 last summer for a battery of Amazon for my 2014 Air and 10 minutes to fit.

Interesting, hadn’t even thought about replacing it myself...
