My iMac has become really flaky since late last week. Frequently freezing and unresponsive for 20 seconds or so. Sometimes the beach ball appears.
Anyone else or is this looking like a hardware issue? It could be Chrome update that's caused it (much of the time I'm working in Chrome windows)
first thing I would do is run the Activity Monitor & filter by CPU load and then, when it beachballs/becomes sluggish, see what app/process is hogging all the resources & possibly causing it. Could be an app or helper utility etc which is running at regular intervals.
Otherwise the usual cause for frequent beachballing is when the HDD is on the way out. If that's the case (and you still have HDD rather than SSD) then the solution (and a massive performance upgrade!) is to transfer everything to a new SSD drive.
I guess Chrome is necessary for your workflow but I'd never recommend it on Mac if Safari would do the job.

Force of habit. IME it just works better for Google apps, Tweetdeck, AwesomeScreenShot(minus). Maybe thats not the case anymore.
Dude, a 3rd party Screenshot app built into Bloaty Chrome is crazy when OS X has perfect screenshot facilities built in (Screenshots also got a big upgrade in Mojave). No comment on Google Docs etc (I don't use 'em) but Chrome on the whole feels slow compared to Safari on my MacBook.
Having said that, if it's a new problem then you should be able to find a fix. As above, the activity monitor thing is the next step. As above could be a HDD issue.

Ok - that has got a lot better but a button or menu item really wouldn't kill them on this. (I've been using Mac forever and for some reason have a mental block on screenshot shortcut). Awesome screenshot is great too - annotation and cropping built in.
hard to tell but i reckon it is chrome that's the issue. Looks like it might be Google Chrome Helper.

Try a switch to Brave, based on Chromium and all the toys for Chrome seem to work on it without the egregious behind the scenes stuff going on.
Safari has a problem displaying our website pop-ups for pricing and what's included. It's a bit of a problem for selling holidays!

I've been on Brave a couple of months, far easier on the machine than Chrome and Safari. Native adblocker even lets you see the classifieds on here.
Called Apple last night (free, spoke to someone within 10 minutes who spent about half an hour on the phone to me trying to clean up the Mac. Amazing service. But hasn't worked).
We did seemingly find signs some malware and he advised stripping all history, extensiona and plugins from Safari and clean reinstall of Chrome. His red light (search for malwarebytes returned numerous adverts above malwarebytes own site) is no longer happening but the freezes are.
I’m sure this basic step has already been covered, but have you used disk utility to run first aid on the main hard drive?
Disk Utility/First Aid isn't finding anything.
Sounds like poor website design tbh 😃Safari has a problem displaying our website pop-ups for pricing and what’s included. It’s a bit of a problem for selling holidays!

You might think that but I have to work with them! I have no doubt you are correct.
Accepted the inevitable and nuked it from orbit, just to be sure.
Reformat of hard drive, clean install of OS and then individual apps. Files and photos all coming back from iCloud, Dropbox and Drive (yes, I know). iTunes folders copied back from Time Machine along with individual apps. I can't believe how smooth and easy it's been. Only frustration is seemingly apps need to be restored from Time machine one at a time - it seems to struggle if I select multiple.
I'm going to NOT install chrome to remove the temptation to use it but so far no sign of hangups.
