Can I get a mouse with a scroll wheel and do they do one that right clicks?

the Magic Mouse already has those features but if you want a mouse that actually has separate physical buttons then yes, you can use any USB or bluetooth mouse.

Not aware that Apple make any, I just use a normal Logitech MX Master and it’s fine.

The Magic Mouse has a right click function (just click the top right of the mouse) and rubbing a finger up or down the length of the mouse is the equivalent of a scroll wheel.
Go in to  -> System Preferences -> Mouse to set up the features.

Apple are wedded to their touch sensitive zero button approach so no Apple Physical button mouses are available, but standard USB ones work just fine. But as Zilog says the normal Apple Magic Mouse does all of that plus more.

bit old but you get the gist...

Scroll direction can be "funky" if you mix time between a trackpad and a mouse with a physical scroll wheel. The "Natural" scroll direction is a single property shared between the two and it doesn't feel normal on a physical wheel (as opposed to an Apple mouse touch gesture). I know this because I have a Dell multi-device mouse and it scrolls one way on my work PC and the opposite on my Mac.

You have to enable it in System Settings -> Mouse -> Point & Click

Answered my own question. There is a ScrollReverser app that lets you get mouse scrolling working the right way.

Magic Mouse is great and right clicking can be set up as above. But I use Logitech and Microsoft ones too if you prefer a more 'analogue' feel.

I can recommend the Magic Trackpad if you want to ditch the mouse.

Feels like the os shortcuts are easier to access to me.

There's an app called bettertouchtool that I've found really, really useful for my Apple Mouse - means you can add 2,3 and 4 finger taps/gestures to do a variety of functions. For instance, I've got a right button tap (not click) to act as a middle button click, so can open up new tabs easier.

It's not absolute and any technician worth their beans will be able to work both competently.

My preference is for MS mice as they are nicely thought out, though the battery reminders from the Apple Mice are helpful (charge state is shown in the menubar Bluetooth icon).

Have looked in settings and made the mouse do what it should. Quite why you have the option to turn off right click ,I don't know.

I am a confirmed Apple fanboi and have several hundred pounds worth of pointing devices but the one that works best is a little £10 logitech wireless (not BT) mouse.

(Anyone in the oil and gas industry - I cannot make Petrel work with the Magic Mouse)

I think it's a Mac legacy thing - Macs historically only ever used 1 button.

How do you right click on a magic mouse?

Click where a right button would be, if there were one.

In my mouse settings it has an option for 'secondary click' to be on the right or the left - for left handed people, presumably, but not to enable or disable secondary click.

There's also an option to reverse scroll direction.

What is annoying about the mouse though is that the gestures on it are different to the trackpad ones.

Just get a lovely space grey aluminium Satechi Bluetooth mouse. It’s lovely, rechargeable and match the Mac ecosystem more aesthetically than the Apple mices 😉

While the mouse afficianados are present - can you recommend a mouse mat that allows the MM to slip effortlessly around? The ones I have are bit too sticky 🙁

Not used a mouse mat in 5 years, is there any real need with good hygiene and an optical mouse?

Although I haven’t tried the latest ones with the touch scrolling, I absolutely love the older Mighty Mouse- the one with the mini trackball scroller. I wish someone else made one like that but can’t seem to find anyone that does.

With WFH and using my iMac as a 2nd screen with my work windows laptop, I've gone to Logitech multi device keyboard & mouse. Much better than 2 of both on my desk and really happy so far. Means i can switch from one to the other with just a button press.

Even when enabled the right click on a magic mouse is dire. It has maybe 70% success rate.

In fact for all their emphasis on things that 'just work' in an effortless manner, I don't understand the magic mouse at all. It's rendered useless when the battery dies giving you no choice but to go and take a 30 minute break while it charges.

I have never had any problem with right click. Works every time.
The bluetooth indicator at the top of the screen tells you how much charge is left in the mouse and keyboard so you should never get caught out by a flat battery.

Apple make great stuff

But the mice are horrific.

I can only assume that the people that like them don’t have human hands or actually use there computers

Logitech MX master is the best choice. The shape and the clutch scroll wheel make it a dream to use.

Actually quite like the Magic Mouse, the scroll function with inertia is brilliant - and I have no problems right clicking it 😉 But since getting into CAD I bought a 3DConnexion CADmouse, and I’m not going back!!

+1. Apples mice are an ergonomic horror.

I’ve used Magic Trackpad for as long as I can remember but was yawing a GIS app for which it was unusable.

Now have both that and an MX master and find I’m using the mouse more than the trackpad these days. Thought it was breaking the other day but actually had just discovered the thumb button which means not reaching for the keyboard to swap workspaces.

Thanks for calling out incompetence where you perceive it. Perception is a talent that arrogant people have in spades.

The App lets you split the configuration (which is the thing you cannot do without the App) so you can set things to your preference. Up until finding this App I avoided using the mouse with the Mac. I use a multi-device mouse and keyboard. I swap between three laptops in the course of my working day. It remains my preference to use a trackpad with the Mac so I keep both mouse and trackpad on my desk and my preference for the trackpad is unequivocally the "natural" scroll direction. The app fixes a niggle so I am more seamlessly productive if I happen to grasp the mouse for Mac-related activity. I also have a Magic Mouse but it doesn't earn desk space. It is a good mouse but not when the mode of use involves swapping between laptops.

Helps dampen the sound of mouse moving across cheap tabletop. That's why I got one. It's slightly more comfortable too.

I’m a long time Mac user now and I’ve always found the mouse choices baffling. Apple spend so much time designing products to be ergonomically great, their trackpads are amazing and the keyboards are (mostly) great. Yet the mice are the opposite - weird form over acceptable function IMO.

But yeah, just get a Logitech MX Master.
