Get startup chime and screen lights up grey, but then goes black and nothing appears to be happening.

Can't get it to boot into recovery mode.

Anyone any suggestions, or do I need to resign myself to a trip to the Apple Store?

All sorted; shining a light through the apple logo on the back of the lid (as suggested elsewhere) showed that it was booting up normally. Restart later with lid open and all is well. Fortunately.

screen connection? may think it's in projection mode or similar?

might be worth getting it checked at the Store if you can..

I think it's a software issue, tbh - because it's sometimes used as an iTunes server, I've got it set to sleep automatically at 2200 and the popup window for this was still open when I rebooted.

Any idea what the purpose is of shining a light in the back?

The Apple logo on the back of the lid is lit up by the screen backlight; if the screen is blacked out and you shine a torch through it, you can see enough of the screen to know whether it's booting normally or not.
