Hve spoken to computer people and as well as the ssd upgrade they say they can uprate the RAM from 2x2 to 2x4 or  2x8 (gb?).

What does the Ram do, should I go for maximum while I'm at it?

It's a mid 2012.

I would go for max for the sake of future proofing. It's what I did and for the relatively modest extra expense. RAM is what the system and active apps loads into so it's always available or something like that. Operating systems and new apps always see to need more and more RAM, if you don't have enough, things load more sluggishly etc and the whole computer feels slower.

I run a mid 2012 MBP with 16GB of RAM and an SSD and it's unrecognisable from the original. When I was running the original 4GB of RAM it struggled to cope. I guess 8GB would also be an improvement, but it felt like future proofing to me...

You can fit your own RAM very easily. Have a look at the iFixit site, Crucial does reliable, affordable RAM.

I was going to edit that so it says 'I also run a mid-2012 MBP', but obviously 'edit post' is on holiday and merely offered me a digital cup of coffee. But basically I have the same machine as you. And that's what I did, SSD plus 16GB.

Just had my mid 2012 upgraded from 4 gb ram to 16 gb and replaced the 500 gb HDD with a 500 gb SSD.

It now flies like it is new again. Well worth the effort. No more beach ball of death to sit and watch.

RAM is handy for if you use memory hungry apps (for me it's mainly Photoshop and Lightroom) and like to have lots of things open at the same time. I would say max it out.

Just got it back from the geeks.

16gb ram and 500 SSD.

From OFF to STW it used to take 3 minutes 20 now it's 1.26.

I did exactly the same upgrade to my Macbook Pro. The difference it made was unbelievable. Like getting a new machine
