I'm down in Windsor for a wedding in August and afterwards looking to head over to France so need to book a ferry / train. Looking at google maps this means doing the southern portion of the M25 on a Monday. I assume I'd want to avoid this like the plague at rush hour.
Question being -
What time would I want to be off the m25 by in the morning before traffic really builds?
Alternatively, what time would I want to start the journey after to avoid the most of the traffic?
Ta
Pessimist: Off the southern half by 7:30. Start after 9pm to avoid the traffic.
Optimistic: heading anticlockwise in the mornings is usually pretty good once you get past the M23 and begin to head towards Kent so I'd aim to get there 7-7:30 to avoid the M4 and M3 junction build ups. ( I drive round to Eurotunnel from Brighton fairly regularly and never worry too much about traffic after I've got on the M25)
between 11 and say 2 is usually quiet but 'it depends' - any events on will affect it.
August will tend to be quieter too as loads of people are on hols and not driving.
It's a lottery.
Mrs Dubs was driving J9-12 every day whilst we were staying with her folks for a bit, took anywhere from 20 mins to 2 hours. Average was an 40 mins.
To be sure, off the motorway before 6:30 would be my advice.
Thank you.
Can you travel out via Portsmouth, would knock a fair chunk off
Leave Windsor before 6am or after 10am. Anti-clockwise traffic on M25 is smoother am peak than clockwise
Win some - Lose some Kilo - Shorter drive to Portsmouth but between 5 - 8 hours on the ferry. Part of me would rather the slightly longer drive to Folkstone then get the chunnel across whilst having a cuppa in the back of the camper...
Note - we haven't decided where in France we're off to so a western crossing may well be betterer.
anti-clockwise is the better direction in the morning traffic wise - just remember to keep to the left lanes and avoid all the other idiots that insist on using the 'faster' lanes.
I used to do 11 to 5 every day.
The earlier you go the less the stress will be so I'd go really early as it is not worth the risk.
Use a satnav to see the traffic - maybe copilot or that Waze thing.
Anti clockwise
Go after 9:30
Done it loads, it's usually okay and takes about 2 hours to Dover (1.5 to chunnel and is betterer 🙂 )
it’s usually okay
that's why I'd go early and avoid the stress in case it isn't OK that morning.
