Anyone ever do power walks as an exercise? I’d love to run but osteoporosis of knee prevents this but a fast walk would ok.
I could fit one in for 45 Mins at lunchtime.
How do avoid looking silly?

You could go the whole hog and get some ski poles to use at the same time ?

I think you're overthinking 'going for a brisk 45 minute walk'. Just walk, briskly, for 45 minutes.

Nothing wrong with overthinking - equivalent to fettling before a bike ride.

You can just go for a walk, but if you go for a 'really quick walk*' then you will be getting some pretty good exercise. Walking really quickly is hard work for a sustained period. Turns out it's also been great for loosening up my hips when I take big strides.

How do avoid looking silly?

Not sure there's any risk of that - you are just walking. The poles don't really add much IMO.

* you can call it power walk if you like, doesn't really matter - ignore the whiners on here.

I thought Harold Bishop as soon as I saw the title ! But Molgrips is right , lots of the country mums round us do it, proper march on rain or shine, some of them for miles. Guessing they wouldn’t be doing it if they weren’t seeing benefits?

Just walk!

Don't track it, don't take any electrical devices, just a watch and observe the world around you.

As above just do it and walk as briskly as suits you. I can't run due to a knee replacement, but go for my 45-90mins constitutional locally for fresh air, exercise and weight bearing.

If there's hill local to you walk up that as you get the effort in with out the impact of walking fast on the flat, I have to come down more steadily to avoid the impact as it can get a tad achy. I cycle too, but a nice walk looking at things can just what the doctor ordered, especially now when working from home.

+1 strava not for walkers.

But most people can't even run a mile than fast!

Weird. I take my phone, because emergencies and my wife might want me. Also works as a map. I don't feel the need to Facebook or whatever on it though.. is this a problem people have?

Get a zookeepers hat and tell people you've lost a tiger; you can walk as fast as you want.

Or take a folded up newspaper and some toilet roll; tell them you've a mole at the counter...

Check out Nordic Walking - it'll provide good exercise whilst avoiding too much stress on your knees.
For example:  Kneesafe - Nordic Walking

https://www.goruck.com/rucking-101

"Rucking" is a thing in the US - basically walking fast whilst wearing a rucksack with some weight in it. Might be worth looking at if you want something harder than unburdened walking.

That's fast. How do you know if someone walking that fast isn't secretly running, despite their assurances that they are simply walking?

It's a whole Olympic sport IIRC - walking you have to have at least 1 foot on the ground at all times, whereas running you spend at least some of the time airborne with no feet on the ground

What Nick said, it was a WR under WR conditions.

Love it when the Olympic walkers break into a run when the cross the line.

The Olympic athletics committee stipulate the maximum and minimum number of feet that must be touching the ground at any one time. Honest.
IIRC it's at least one, but no more than two, otherwise you will be horstracised.

If you are happy to look silly, you can get a great cardio workout using 1-2kg weights in each hand but you need to be moving them above heart hight as you walk, otherwise just walk and enjoy it

No-one mentioned Facebook, just you.

There are a number of reasons for leaving the phone or turning it off at least.

Using a device for tracking walking takes some of the simplicity and connectedness of why one is walking. Also, I wouldn't want a map for a 45 min walk - even if you don't know where'd you are then observing where you've been and how long it has taken you to make the mental calculations is part of the exercise. Devices are often shared with work, well mine is, with emails and work WhatsApps on there. If I'm walking for leisure then I'd not be want that infringing.

As to emergencies? I've got two young kids and don't have to be in emergency contact from the wife for less than an hours exercise. That's weird to me.
