I've detected a small lump on the side of my neck. Same sort of height as my jaw and 10cm or so back from the bottom of my ear. Seems to be more prominent if I crane my neck to the opposite side (stretching the flesh over it I guess).

Worthy of a wee trip to the docs?

Aye. But I've got a cheek to talk. Have had a spot/mole in the downtown district for about five years now. Gets ever so slightly bigger each year. If I'm riddled I only have myself to blame!

I think there's a small gland there that gets bigger when you're fighting off illness, so no I don't think it's a problem. But hey, I'm a town planner, not a doctor 🙂

Lymph nodes are more below the ear - so its not them Is it loose IE you can feel its not attached to anything either the skin or whats underneath? Probably a sebaceous cyst or a lipoma both are harmless. However any lump needs to be checked. If its attached to other structures then get it checked asap

yep..better safe than sorry. I noticed an abnormality a while back that I got checked out, turns out it was potentially something rather nasty that could have turned cancerous if I'd ignored it. Nipped it in the bud there and then.

its probably nothing, but do it for piece of mind if nothing else, docs visit will take half our out your day max...

Have a poke with a pen knife. It that doesn't help get the doc of perhaps an ambulance.

I found a small lump in my neck just under my jaw line. Went to the Docs, had a biopsy the next day. Had the lump removed 3 days later. Started Chemotherapy 2 days after that. So yes get it checked out.
Whats the reason not to?

To be fair if that's true you've had a good innings mate.

What do you put your longevity down to ?

Tj - there are chains of lymph nodes all over the body. The peri-auriclar ones are below the ear, but cervical LNs start where Druid speaks of.....

Go to the Dr, and they can assess it and see if it meets local cancer guidelines (lets not beat about the bush -the obvious worry is cancer isn't it?! There are guidelines for neck lumps that are quite straight forward).

Alternatively, the doc could look at you and simply say "it's a spot you berk -Give it a squeeze....!"

Good luck,

DrP

OT, but...
Two fellas sat in a doctors waiting room, both a little anxious.
One says to t'other, "What you in for?"
"I've got a red ring round my knob" says the second,
"Crikey, that's a co-incidence " says the first, " I've got a green one round mine!"

At that point the first chap is called in, and is out again in under a minute, all smiles and very relieved.
"what did he say?"
"Nothing to worry about" the now happy first fella replied, " he just gave it a wipe with this special sort of solution and it disapeared: i'm all clear and ready for action!" and off he went.

"NEXT!" calls the doctor, and in he goes. After showing the doc the problem, there follows a great deal of "umming" and "aaahing", after which the doctor says

" I'm sorry, but we're gong to have to amputate your knob!"

"What?" says the patient, "WHAT???!!!"
" Yes " said the doc, " the protocols are quite clear, and there's no time to waste!"

"But.... But......" stammered the patient, " you dealt with that other bloke just by wiping it off with some'at! Amputate?? By all that's 29er, Why can't you just do the same for me???"

"Because, young man" responded the doc....

"there's one helluva difference between Lipstick and Gangrene!"

Btum tish! 🙂

I had a similar thing on the back of my head, turned out to be a Serbaceous Cyst, had it chopped out under local anesthetic. Go see your GP.

Nah, leave it.

You'll be fine. Only the habitually unhealthy and inactive get cancer.

Oh...

You might need to watch your diet carefully from now on but you need to check with the doctor really. Could be the sign of cancer at the early stage etc ...

Och you're fine! It's just the chip on your shoulder moved up due to the weight of the world being there 😉

I had a "white head" (if that's the right term) just about where you describe and it turned into a right nasty lump before going all "colgate" on me.

Get it checked - I'd guesstimate - 99% hypochondria.

I wouldn't trust any doctor with body piercings or tattoos.

Unless they were a lady.

If it boosts confidence further, it may be receiving to hear I wasn't a doctor when I was 15, and that the bling went years ago............

It has. I now feel fully confident to once again listen to your medical diagnoses, despite your youthful lack of good judgment.

But you can see my concern can't you ? I mean in the same vein would you trust a bricklayer without tattoos ? I certainly wouldn't.

^ TBH, it's a pretty dated view to have that the medical profession shouldn't have tattoos or peircings.... I agree that forearm work or facial piercingls are a bit off putting, but other parts, meh...
I mean, Shipman and This guy both seem like 'prim and proper' types who you wouldn't expect ink or nipple rings on.......

Anyway, back on track -best of luck op...

Just to show that I can actually listen to advice.....

I was at the docs today and he reckons a Sebaceous Cyst and not to be too concerned. I've to keep an eye on it.

Having realised it's more than 5 years since they measured my BP (can you tell I don't see them much?) he decided to spring that on me. Is 89/69 pretty low?

I've just googled goggle images for "Sebaceous Cyst" .........big mistake 😐

Sounds disgusting - can't you get it removed ?

I've had two removed under local, they come out looking like a very small strawberry. One was on my shoulder and one on my chest. Ask your GP to refer you to the next lumps and bumps clinic and they will do it in 10 minutes.

No need to have it removed, just keep an eye on it (metaphorically speaking) and if it gets bigger/more annoying then they might want to take it out.

Worth going along though. A mate of mine is currently undergoing chemotherapy for a throat cancer. I was starting to get a bit worried.

It might get evil like Chris Griffin's one called Doug 😐

Do you have to wrap a scarf round your neck so one can see it ?

Not yet, but I was hoping I might be able to draw a face on it and go to the next fancy dress party as Zaphod Beeblebrox

I had a sebaceous cyst behind my right ear for years. Long enough that I didn't know how long it had been there.. Doctors pretty much stuck to the line of 'if it gets infected we'll be deal with it, or it may drain on it's own'.

One evening I was absent-mindedly probing said cyst while watching the telly, when it decided to let go a fountain of grim stinking pus.

Was quite satisfying, if disgusting, getting it all out and having my ear back to normal.

I had a bump pretty much exactly there a while back

Developed into a sort of green area with a stream of clear fluid coming out at its base and pooling around it

Doc said it was just a beauty spot

I expect your doc is right - another vote from me to keep a close eye on it, though, particularly if it's hard to the touch (ie you can move it around under the skin).

My neck lump turned out to be something slightly less harmless...
