Trying to cut carbs for a few months but really cant cut out white rice. Whats the thoughs on decent alternatives ? Cous cous ? Pearl barley ?.. or just reduce rice portion a bit. I eat rice with most lunches and evening meals. Cutting bread, pasta and potatoes has been pretty easy so far
Thanks
from what I've read, its a no-no. cauli-rice is the supposed replacement, but i havent tried that.
not sure waht the carb count is for rice, but work out how much is in a portion and add it into your daily target/allowance?

Ideally you would want to have most or all of your carbs coming from green vegetables, that way you can pretty much eat as many "carbs" as you want and you'll still be "low carb".
If you're trying to achieve Ketosis then you'll have to avoid rice of any variety. It's a high-starch carb. A real low carb diet will be less than 20-30g of carbs per day, there are around 40-45g in one cup of rice.
You need to think laterally with any new diet, but low-carb especially. If whatever you usually have with your rice doesn't go with anything else, then you may need to change that as well as the rice. Cauliflower rice is a great replacement though, if a little less simple to make. Search online for recipes.
This site has excellent information on the hows and whys of low carb.

Already been said.... defo no rice if you want to go low carb.
I'm 4 months into a low carb diet and am 15kg down from where I started. I miss rice more than bread and pasta but it has to go if you really want to lose weight.
I've tried cauli rice but I'd really rather just have a big pile of green beans - even with curry!
Depends if you’re actually trying to go low-carb or just cut out simple carbs à la iDiet. If the latter then sweet potatoes, beans/lentils & quinoa are good alternatives.
Cauliflower rice... makes an awesome nasi goring.
I did some cauliflower rice last night to go with my curry. Just blitzed it to rice sized bits in my (other 😀) mini-chopper. Added some chopped spinach. Fried in a bit of oil - with some pilau spice mix and a tiny bit of a veg stock cube. Actually preferred it to rice!
I have been low carb not no carb for 2 yrs. I dropped white rice and switched to brown rice whole grain with grains/ quinoa etc. Probably reduced my intake by 2/3rds approx. Seems to work for me. Cauli rice is easy to make, I prefer it baked on a tray as apposed to frying. It’s dryer and less greasy with a better texture.
They both flippantly and correct answer is vegetables.
If you're going low carb then replace starchy fillers with veg. Stuff like broccoli, green beans, peas, etc are perfect. In the microwave with a bit of butter. Done.
I hope the new macro balance suits you well. There are no magic tricks out there but lower carbs does tend to be more sustainable than low fat.
Actually peas are not good for a low carb diet.
Nothing wrong with cauliflower rice. Most supermarkets sell it if you can't be arsed making your own. Aldi do broccoli rice as well. I find the broccoli in its own too much. I would suggest half n half.
Whats the thoughs on decent alternatives ?
Don't try and replace the starchy foods with mock starchy foods - they aren't satisfying or nice. Just cook more creatively.
If you want a curry, stir in some chickpeas or add lentils, and have a dhal/meat hybrid. Or just have a bowl of normal dhal. Likewise chilli, just extra beans and eat it out of a bowl, Americans call this chilli soup. If you want Italian, have meat with sauce and separate side of veg - roasted peppers, sweet pots with pesto, or some seasoned lentils with your fish etc etc, it's how they serve the main courses (non-pasta) in Italian restaurants.
If you're having sausages or steak or a naked burger, have it with veg. Cauliflower is great here but don't fart about with mash - it's never as good - just have cauliflower cheese which is delicious.
Actually peas are not good for a low carb diet.
They are low GI, plus the main thing is that you can eat far fewer peas than you can chips, so the amount of carbs ends up being less.
Rather than cutting out carbs, and also being on a 'diet', I have been only really eating carbs post workout. Works for me, feels like you've earned it, and most importantly for me, it's sustainable.
I cut rice, potatoes and bread recently for over a month and saw results.
Plenty of spiralised butternut squash and/or courgette served as 'spaghetti/noodles' worked with bolognaise or chilli dishes. Also agree with the comment on dahl/lentils etc. I normally find a big plate of roast veggies (carrots, squash, cauli etc) with a green lentil casserole leaves me no room for rice anyway. So it's not missed.
Actually peas are not good for a low carb diet
As said above, better than chips or piles of rice which is 99% starch. They also have greater satiety, also mentioned. The question is also around low carb which is very different to zero carb and others mentions of ketosis.
Let's not overcomplicate this. Yes, peas have carbohydrates and sugars in them as do apples.
No-one ever got fat from too many peas or apples.
If you really cant cut it out, try a mix of brown rice and quiona. It keeps you fuller for longer and you won't need anywhere near the same portion size.
