Had to put one of my hounds to sleep on Wednesday.

Feeling absolutely gutted.

I post on here just over a year ago, when he had balance problems, but they cleared up after a couple of days. Thought it was an inner ear infection.

Then this February he just wasn't "right". He wasn't moving properly and had slowed down. So we took him to the vets and he had a full check out but they couldn't find anything. Gave us some anti-inflammatory and that seemed to really help him. I put it down to getting older.

Move on a couple of weeks and his balance problems started again, he went to the vets and he got antibiotics and steroids. They said it could of been a stroke or his ear and wanted to try the treatment before doing a MRI. Again he responded well but then as soon as the tablets stopped he got much worse. tried the tablets again but they didn't help. He just got worse.

He went for his scan and they discovered a tumour on his brain stem. We never woke him from his anaesthetic.

A bit of a long post but I think I needed to unload a bit.

It's amazing how attached you get to them.

Nightmare, I watch my dog get old with much trepidation. Just hope I can do the right thing like you have.

I sometimes think about how I'll cope when the time comes for mine.

I try and justify it by reasoning that they have reletivley (compared to humans) short life spans so it's an enevitable. And nothing will change that, the only thing you have any control over is how they go to hopefully minimise any pain.
I don't suppose it makes it any easier when it has to be done.

They are only with us a short time no matter what, so it's our job to give them the best time. Hopefully you can take some comfort in that.

Sorry for your loss.

Sorry to hear about your mutt mate. Make the most of the time you have with them. It always seems unfair how short a time we have with them.

Sorry to hear that. Lost my true best mate a couple of years ago to cancer. A border collie i got from a rescue centre when he was 1. Died at 14 and it really hurt as he went everywhere with me, even to work. We soon got another dog and although he dosent replace Max, hes great and really helped us get over the loss.

Sorry to hear that as well. It’s a horrible time.

We had to put our 3 year old lab to sleep a couple of weeks ago. Right thing to do for Amber, but we were totally distraught. She had a great time with us for those three years, but taken far too soon.

Having just been through his very situation with my cat 2 weeks ago, you have my sympathy and best wishes as I could not believe how upsetting the entire situation was.

Remember the good times and take solace in knowing that you did the right (but incredibly difficult) thing.

Sorry to hear that mate, the big thing is that you were there for him for all his life and now you can do the same for another dog.

So sorry. It's awful. Been through similar with one my past dogs. Amazing how they become such a big part of ones life. Sure he moved on feeling blissfully happy to be in your life. Dogs really are a man's best friend.

Sorry for your loss. We've had to go through this 3 times, but one of the reasons we have two dogs is to ensure that the heartache isn't quite as painful. Our old basset hound is getting a bit wobbly, but our young Labrador is having her first season so there's plenty of life in the old dog yet!

So sorry for your loss.  It is one of the most difficult things to deal with IMHO.

Dogs are hairy, messy, dig holes in your garden, eat your furniture, eat your shoes, eat your lunch, and don't even have the decency to declare an out of the way corner of the territory the toilet area.

We've got two right now and wouldn't swap them for anything. Losing your best furry mate is horrible. Sounds like you made the right call though, there's a time when you just can't make their lives better again. Remember the good times you had with him. We lost one last winter, I still think about him.

So sorry to hear about your loss, we've got a 12 year old lab and keep thinking about it.
We lost our airedale to a tumour at 11 years old. Still miss him.
