I keep losing the above. Can run fine, then all of a sudden the connection stops. And wont come back even if i restart the computer or restart the router.
Might or might not be connected though but if im online and i pick up the phone,- landline, the internet can go down, and takes a few mins to come back.
For example there I had to sign in to paypal- you know when they send you a code and you punch it into the handset. Connection was lost and I thought it was going to time out, but came back and the sign in and purchase was completed.
Alternatively, like just now I've had no internet connection for the last hour, and done several restarts both computer and router and nowt. But I just phoned my sister because i still suspect it is the phone line might be causing the problem, and lo and behold the internet connection has come back on.
Its all very weird, and all very very annoying.
If it is any connection the phone has been crackly for a few months prior, but its only in the last week the internet connection is being lost.
I dont even know if I'll still be on to read any replies to this thread.
Any help is much appreciated.
Can you pick up a local WiFi connection? I've I'm with BT and can use their local ones.
Try a new filter
If you phone line is crackling then report it as a phone line fault.
Raise a fault with your ISP and if they can't find an issue with the router they should arrange for a line check. You could go straight to your line provider (BT or whoever) but I had a couple of issues in recent months and it was quicker going via ISP (I think they have a quicker route through to BT than Joe Public does).
Get fibre. All this nonsense will be a thing of the past.
Your filter is knackered. Even if it's a pre filtered socket they look chunky and have one port for the phone and one for the adsl cable
Solution is as above get fttp if available it just works *mostly
I had crackly line and dodgy internet connection for nearly a year.
Plusnet sent new router, did all the 'we're checking, but there's no fault' remotely.
BT then came out - new master socket bypassing the 1970's GPO doofer the house had.
Still no improvement.
They then came back and ripped out my extension cable to place router in middle of house.
Still no improvement.
Senior technician spent a whole morning.
He called a pal - who asked if it was 1970's house. Said pal turned up and opened a small hatch in the middle of the cul-de-sac and pulled on the cables - revealing some half melted and worn through cables. Apparently he's seen it on a few Scottish 1970's estates that had early sunken cables. Basically over 50 years the cables have rubbed.
Problem solved.
So keep looking - and don't accept a dodgy line and iffy connection
Can you pick up a local WiFi connection?
wifi isnt switched on. I've always felt it was a bit dodgy and insecure. Plus i used to game and the hardwired connection was what i always went for.

That will be my next move. Its come on all of a sudden and I've changed nothing, not even moved a wire so i must lie somewhere within the system.

As above. Im with talk talk so its them will be getting a call soon as i can. They do the landline and the internet, and bloody charge me enough.

There its a case of if they have that system laid, and not all areas have been.
I did a download speed test there, came back a pretty shocking 16.50 mbs, and to think im paying them £52/month for the internet connection unlimited download and landline with a few free numbers i hardly call anyway.
I noticed doing the test the adverts even for talk talk for 500mbs fibre for £40/month, so they've been ripping me off these past years.
I'm not very techie minded and usually stick to what I know, but it makes me wonder if I could save a lot just getting the internet and using my mobile for all telephone calls.
This is what complacency gets you. Paying for the internet, plus a landline and paying for a mobile that also gives me the phone and web.
It sounds like a line fault given the limited information.
Are you able to connect to your router from your PC?
For example, open firefox (other browsers are available) and type: 192.168.1.1 (i think that's the IP that talktalk routers use curently, but worth double checking )into the address bar.
Also, for purposes of elimination, unplug any hard wired phones you have, because no one uses hard wired phones since the late 90's.
yep, when I moved to fibre the cheapest option was the same or less than I was currently paying for broadband + phone line! (though optionally went faster)so they’ve been ripping me off these past years.
yepif I could save a lot just getting the internet and using my mobile for all telephone calls.
Are you using powerline networking? I gave up on it some time ago because it used to knock out the broadband.
Nope.. That will make no difference if it's FTTC.
If it's FTTP then it's absolutely the issue of the ISP.
It's sounding on the surface like a line problem (BT open or ISP).
But it would be very useful purposes of elimination to establish of @dyna-tie can reliably connect to the router from the PC, in the first instance.
But also if the OP has 3 other people, children for example, gaming and streaming and downloading concurrent.. That could well be an issue..
So the OP needs to log into his router to see what's going on.
Are you using powerline networking?
I have no idea what that is.
Anyway. Deffo the phone line causing it because I got back online, and was watching netflix when the net went down. This happened 3 times.
It seems that simply switching on the landline but not dialing anything for about 30 seconds and then hanging up appears to fix the issue. Meaning that picking up a new line, or this interruption means i get a new line(or whatever and that seems to solve the problem, though only on a temp basis, and the main issue is still there.
Why or what causes it to suddenly go down, even when nothing is in use is flummoxing me. It seems completely random. But at least it identifies where the issue is and having talk talk look into it should hopefully resolve the issue. I need my internet. there would be no bikey bargains otherwise and that would be tragic.

Something I'll look into. Its always the case f the oldest customers get stuffed and most deals are aimed at new customers. So changing to fibre should that be an option is going to be cheaper, as well as maybe dropping the landline for all the use it really gets.
Can you log into your router?
We lost internet intermittently at first but then completely but still had landline. Problem was a tree rubbing the phone line in a field about 100 yards away. If I recall the explanation, the internet only used one core of the two in the cable, which had failed, but the landline could use either, so still worked.
the phone has been crackly
That's your answer. Ignore the ADSL issues, focus on the voice. Report a crackly line to BT.
wifi isnt switched on. I’ve always felt it was a bit dodgy and insecure
It isn't.
But as above - crackly line means bad internet. It will go bad randomly, that's what noise does. Also probably if someone calls you.
if I could save a lot just getting the internet and using my mobile for all telephone calls.
Get yourself familiar with MoneySavingExpert. It's things like this they're good at explaining how to save and get better service.
(£25 a month for 58mbs unlimited broadband and basic phone line, 2x mobiles with 15gb data and unlimited calls for £7.40 a month here for example).
I just moved house and went from 900 to 70 speed wise because there's no fttp in the area (and unlikely to be for years and years) but the full 900 was about the same price as our old internet and phone line rental although we should have changed that years ago.
Anyway when I moved in the connection was awful speeds were really slow but by chance there was a spare appointment with an open reach engineer the next day. Turns out that the cable in the box up the pole in the next garden had some corrosion/rubbing and was shorting out, the engineer was done in about a hour. One thing I found out though is that even though the exchange is probably 100m going along the road and way shorter going by the poles when he checked the wiring it's almost 600m worth of wire so it must go around half the damn village!
Can you log into your router?
It's asking for log in details i dont have. Might do, but never had to do that before so I dont know.
Anyway, thanks for the money saving expert idea, I'll look into that too. As well as finding out if talk talk have fibre in my area.
Is the router old? If you have been with TalkTalk a while, I bet you have a really old thing.... We also had issues with a router (sky?) one year which was resolved by a new model of router...
