As it says, does anyone know of or use such. I'd like a gadget that shows OS Grid Ref and wouldn't need much else.

I'm a Luddite, still stuck in the era of map and compass

Is it really a GPS receiver of some sort you need rather than something to plan and calculate routes?

Any smartphone will have an app for that - or get a Garmin Etrex (or similar) off ebay.

For a laugh, you could always buy my Garmin Nuvi. It's so simple, it can hardly tell where you are. In fact, I would describe it less as 'simple', and more as... well... I'll leave it to your imagination.

Better yet, stick with map and compass. At least they won't command you to randomly exit the M4 when you are on your way home to Cardiff from London.

All I want is a backup for those moments of geographic uncertainty, a lazy alternative to back-tracking or taking bearings. It's an age thing.

Garmin Etrex 10 would do that - but it is very basic. The 20 and 30 are more expensive but allow you to display maps.

Well, if you've got a smartphone there are a bunch of apps, real simple ones, that give OS grid ref, Lat/long, etc.

Actually, as far as smartphone apps are concerned, on iOS at least, UK Map, by Phil Endacott, is very good, it uses free OS map downloads, and gives a Grid ref at the top, when the satellite is enabled, and centre's on your current location.
You can download tiles in 1:25k and 1:10k, with RoW details shown from Openstreetmap.
Having issues with Photobucket at the mo', otherwise I'd post a screenshot.

I have an old original Garmin Etrex (no OS maps, just VERY VERY basic black and white major road map) - however displays grid ref, can load/record routes, and route follow turn arrow type navigation, and bar mount etc, will email you when not at work
