So, with some issues where I work now I've been on the lookout for a new job since January, not having much luck. I live on the south coast between Brighton and Eastbourne which kind of restricts the area where I can look, I'm ruling out anything in the centre of Brighton as travelling is crazy, 2+ hours everyday to earn a not that impressive wage, that's about 40 hours a month just getting to work. Anyway question is where do people look for work these days? I work in a school so I check the TES and eteach websites and local school websites (not a teacher but support staff) there's nothing in my area at all. So I'm thinking maybe a change of direction but again where to look. Local papers are useless, google searches comes up with websites like indeed etc. I sometimes look at company websites if I see something as I'm going around but nodody seems to have anything. Most of what I have found is less pay, more hours manual type jobs. I sometimes wonder if I should do one of these just until something better comes up but the wife says I'd be bored of it pretty quickly. It's been a while since I've had to do this so, where else could I be looking?

Indeed is as good as anywhere as it scrapes jobs from lots of different websites, Google Jobs is similar.

There are also specific job boards to look at, Reed, CV-Library and Jobsite being the biggest 3.

For jobs in education and the public sector in general, there is also the council or LEA's websites.

And finally, agencies. Work out what you want to do and find an agency that specialises in that area rather than a generalist.

I was in a similar position and got a job on the railways- platform staff.  Loved that job!  Check your local networks vacancies.

Check local council websites for teaching etc jobs

Both my current and next (start in October) jobs have been from the job search feature on linkedin where it recommends stuff related to what you do. I do work in retail/tech though so perhaps they are more likely to appear on it.

I'm not a fan of agencies, but a local one that someone recommends may be worth hunting out?

For school jobs like technicians check the local paper. Old fashioned, I know but it seems valid in Surrey. Independent and state schools.

Shame you're not close enough as we can't find enough candidates around Chichester !

Hi Kojak,

When you say "support staff" do you mean TA, HLTA or Science/D&T type Technician?

Science/D&T Technician jobs tend to be dead-man shoes type jobs.  They only come up very infrequently and then generally go to semi-retired people who have masses of industry experience and only want to work part-time.

TA and HLTA jobs are being cut like you wouldn't believe because of the obvious budgetry pressures that shools are under.

Had you thought of doing your PGCE?

Cheers and good luck.

I'm a technician, plenty of jobs in London and around the UK but we can't move to London and don't really want to move from where we are. I like getting the holidays and the money is OK but new-ish boss is becoming a pain, so I've been re-evaluating my travelling time, workloads and the hassle I've had and wondering if it's something I want to carry on doing. I'll just have to suckling it up and keep an eye out. PGCE did that and had a go at teaching but found it wasn't really for me.
